21 March 2020, Brandenburg, Mallnow: In the early morning the flowers of Adonis roses on the Oderbruch hillsides in the district of Märkisch-Oderland are still closed. The mild temperatures of the last few days have led to the blossoming of the Adonis roses particularly early this year. The area between Lebus on the Oder and Mallnow on the Oderbruch rim in East Brandenburg is one of the largest contiguous Adonisröschen areas in Europe. In Brandenburg these strictly protected species only occur on the Pontic Hills north of Frankfurt (Oder). The area was declared a dry grassland nature reserve for the poisonous flowers in 1984.
