キーワード:ピエール=オーギュスト・ルノワール、Pierre-Auguste Renoir: Girl in Gray-Blue, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, c. 1889, Oil on canvas, The son of a tailor, Renoir loved to depict the latest fashion trends. Here he presents a stylish woman wearing a high-collared dress, gloves, and an eye-catching hat. Despite the specificity given to the clothing, Renoir leaves the settingand his sitterundefined. The painting is done in a portrait format, and yet we are not sure who the woman is or where she is supposed to be. Less a portrait of a specific person, Renoir has instead rendered a typethe modern Parisian woman., Overall: 26 3/16 x 20 1/2 in. RACE HORSES.

Race Horses. Artist: Edgar Degas (French, Paris 1834-1917 Paris). Dimensions: 11 7/8 x 16 in. (30.2 x 40.6 cm). Date: ca. 1885-88.Degas undertook racing scenes throughout his career, characteristically manipulating his horses and jockeys from one picture to the next. All the figures here appear in earlier works, and some of the poses have pedigrees even more distinguished than the horses: the prancing mount and rider at the center derive from Benozzo Gozzoli‘s <i>Journey of the Magi</i> in the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi, Florence, which Degas had copied in 1859. This picture is nevertheless unusual for its medium--pastel on a plain, unvarnished panel. With skillful economy of means, Degas allowed the wood to color the sky and distant landscape, and to provide a warm undertone for the turf in the foreground. Bubo virginianus, Print, The great horned owl (Bubo virginianus), also known as the tiger owl (originally derived from early naturalists‘ description as the “winged tiger“ or “tiger of the air“) or the hoot owl, is a large owl native to the Americas. It is an extremely adaptable bird with a vast range and is the most widely distributed true owl in the Americas. Its primary diet is rabbits and hares, rats and mice, and voles, although it freely hunts any animal it can overtake, including rodents and other small mammals, larger mid-sized mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. In ornithological study, the great horned owl is often compared to the Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo), a closely related species, which despite the latter‘s notably larger size, occupies the same ecological niche in Eurasia, and the red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), with which it often shares simi、クレジット:Album/quintlox/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Physalia megalista, Print, The Portuguese man o‘ war (Physalia physalis), also known as the man-of-war, is a marine hydrozoan found in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Commissioned in 1920, she was named after the 18th-century Admiral Samuel Hood. One of four Admiral-class battlecruisers ordered in mid-1916, Hood had design limitations, though her design was revised after the Battle of Jutland and improved while she was under construction. For this reason she was the only ship of her class to be completed. Despite the appearance of new and more modern ship designs over time, Hood remained the largest and most powerful warship in the world for twenty years after her commissioning and her prestige was reflected in her nickname “The Mighty Hood“.、クレジット:John Short/Universal Images Group/共同通信イメージズ

View of Houses in Delft, known as ‘The Little Street‘ by Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) oil on canvas, c 1658. This painting of a quiet street with a few figures occupies an exceptional place in Vermeer‘s oeuvre. Straight angles give the composition balance, while the triangle of the sky introduces a sense of dynamism. The old walls, coarse bricks and white plasterwork are almost palpable. Vermeer nonetheless took some liberties with reality, such as the oversized green shutters.、クレジット:World History Archive/ニューズコム/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用に関してはお問合せください。

Vincent van Gogh: The Smoker (Le Fumeur), Vincent van Gogh, 1888, Oil on canvas, During his stay in Arles, a small town in the rural south of France, Van Gogh concentrated on painting the town‘s inhabitants--including the local mailman (Room 2) and the farm workers whose simple lifestyle he admired and idealized. Here, Van Gogh depicts a peasant smoking a pipe. The figure wears a humble coat comprised of loose, muddy strokes; ruddy cheeks suggest his work outdoors. Above his shoulder, a few horizontal dashes indicate puffs of smoke; thick, unblended marks describe an ear. Despite these moments of near abstraction, Van Gogh maintains an astounding attention to naturalistic detail, paying attention to the way a person really looks and behaves. Note how the man‘s mouth is slightly clenched to hold the pipe; and how his moustache is uneven rather than perfectly trimmed.、クレジット:Universal Images Group/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用に関してはお問合せください。

The white heads of the birds and their long tail feathers are symbols of longevity, as is the ancient tree upon which they perch, for despite being covered with snow, the tree has already sprouted new growtha sign of its enduring vigor.、クレジット:Album/quintlox/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Manis pentadactyla, Print, The Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) is a pangolin found in northern India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, northern Indochina, through most of Taiwan, and southern China (including the islands of Hainan). The Chinese pangolin is one of eight species of pangolins. All eight of these shy and secretive mammals are facing moderate to severe population scarcity in recent times. Asian pangolin species, especially the Chinese pangolin and the Sunda pangolin, are the most endangered of all the pangolin species. The IUCN reports that the number of Chinese pangolins has declined greatly over the past 15 years. Despite being listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN and being protected by CITES, poaching continues to be the main cause of their decline in numbers. Deforestation has also contributed to their depletion., 1700-1880.、クレジット:Album/quintlox/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Date: 1774.Despite its traditional title, this sheet represents not a sultan but a model dressed in Turkish attire. Posing and drawing figures in exotic costume was a long-standing tradition at the Académie de France in Rome where Fragonard had studied--a practice connected both to masquerades and to the training of young history painters. However, this sheet dates to 1774, when Fragonard visited Rome a second time, this time in the company of his patron, Pierre Jacques Onésyme Bergeret de Grancourt. As with many of his brown wash drawings of the 1770s, the wash here is intentionally diluted, its transparency leaving visible the freely executed black chalk underdrawing.A modern copy of this drawing, once considered to be the original, is also in the museum‘s col、クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Date: 1643.King David, barely discernible atop the palace in the background, sees Bathsheba bathing and sends for her, despite the fact that she is married to his loyal soldier Uriah (Samuel 2:2-5). The king later arranges for Uriah to be killed in battle. The painting is one of a few dating from the 1640s in which Rembrandt revives his early, precisely descriptive manner in order to produce fine “cabinet pictures“ for collectors. (21.8 x 32.6 cm). Date: 1534.In 1534 Baldung made three woodcuts of wild horses in a dark and dense forest, a subject unique to him that had neither precedent nor following. The prints are so idiosyncratic that they must have had strong personal meaning for him, then in about his fiftieth year. Even though the horses and their poses do not look entirely real, they are fascinating in their strangeness and intensity. This is the least overtly sexual of the three works, but it may be guessed that the stallions are fighting for possession of a mare. Despite their common name, guinea pigs are not native to Guinea, nor are they biologically related to pigs, and the origin of the name is still unclear. They originated in the Andes of South America, and studies based on biochemistry and hybridization suggest they are domesticated descendants of a closely related species of cavy such as C. tschudii, and therefore do not exist naturally in the wild., reproductive organs and jaws.、クレジット:Album/quintlox/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Hippopotamus amphibius, Print, The common hippopotamus, or hippo, is a large, mostly herbivorous,

Hippopotamus amphibius, Print, The common hippopotamus, or hippo, is a large, mostly herbivorous, semiaquatic mammal and ungulate native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae, the other being the pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis or Hexaprotodon liberiensis). The name comes from the ancient Greek for “river horse“. After the elephant and rhinoceros, the common hippopotamus is the third-largest type of land mammal and the heaviest extant artiodactyl. Despite their physical resemblance to pigs and other terrestrial even-toed ungulates, the closest living relatives of the Hippopotamidae are cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises, etc.) from which they diverged about 55 million years ago., 1700-1880.、クレジット:Album/quintlox/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。
