  • Dakhan Common Casto Butterfly - Castor Oil Plant - Animal India
    2024年03月31日
Dakhan Common Casto Butterfly - Castor Oil Plant - Animal India

The Dakhan Common Castor (Ariadne merione merione) is an orange butterfly found in South and Southeast Asia, with a wingspan ranging between 30-35 mm. Its larvae feed almost exclusively on the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis). Like others in the family Nymphalidae, it has small, unused front legs, effectively making it four-legged. These smaller appendages are covered with long hairs, giving them a characteristic brush-like appearance. This species of butterfly is seldom seen full-bodied and can sometimes be observed sipping plant sap. Their main food source is the extract from fruits that have fallen and rotted on the ground. A Dakhan Common Castor butterfly was observed sitting on a branch of a castor oil plant in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on March 31, 2024. • Semi-looper (Achaea Janata) - Animal India
    2024年07月16日
Semi-looper (Achaea Janata) - Animal India

Achaea janata, commonly known as the Castor Semi-looper or Croton Caterpillar, is an erebid moth. The caterpillars are called ‘semi-loopers‘ due to their distinctive mode of locomotion. This species is found in the Indo-Australian tropics and subtropics, extending south to New Zealand and east through the Pacific archipelagos to Easter Island. It is a major pest of castor plants worldwide. As they feed on the castor oil plant, the caterpillars may become extremely poisonous. They damage foliage, resulting in defoliation and a reduction in the photosynthesis process. They also attack stems, boring into them, which can cause the entire plant to wilt and die. A Castor Semi-looper (Achaea janata) was observed sitting on the wall of a house in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on 16/07/2024.
