Jezero Crater Was a Lake in Mars‘ Ancient Past

October 26, 2020, Florida, USA: This illustration shows Jezero Crater, the landing site of the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover, as it may have looked billions of years go on Mars, when it was a lake. An inlet and outlet are also visible on either side of the lake. A key objective for Perseverance‘s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet‘s geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith (broken rock and dust). NASA Perseverance Rover Lands on Mars

February 18, 2021, Pasadena, California, USA: Members of NASA‘s Perseverance rover team react in mission control after receiving confirmation the spacecraft successfully touched down on Mars, Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021, at NASA‘s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. A key objective for Perseverance‘s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet‘s geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith. NASA Perseverance Rover Lands on Mars

February 19, 2021, Jezero Crater, Mars: This is the first high-resolution, color image to be sent back by the Hazard Cameras (Hazcams) on the underside of NASA‘s Perseverance Mars rover after its landing on Feb. 18, 2021.

February 20, 2021 - Mars Surface - This panorama, taken on Feb. 20, 2021, by the Navigation Cameras, or Navcams, aboard NASA‘s Perseverance Mars rover, was stitched together from six individual images after they were sent back to Earth. Subsequent missions, currently under consideration by NASA in cooperation with ESA (European Space Agency), would send spacecraft to Mars to collect these cached samples from the surface and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis. Nasa Perseverance Rover Lands On Mars

Feb 22, 2021, Jezero Crater, Mars: Stitched together from 79 individual images, this Mastcam-Z right-eye 110-mm zoom mosaic is from Perseverance camera‘s first high-resolution panorama imaging sequence. These images were taken on the afternoon of Sol 4 of the mission; a sol is a Martian day. The camera was commanded to take these images by scanning the mast, or “head,“ a full 360-degrees around the horizon visible from the landing site. The top of some of the distant crater rim is cut off in some images to ensure the images would cover the front ridge of the Jezero Crater‘s ancient delta, which is only about 1.25 miles (2 kilometers) away from the rover in the center of this panorama. The mosaic is not white balanced but is instead displayed in a preliminary calibrated version of a natural color composite, approximately simulating the colors of the scene that we would see if we were there viewing it ourselves. A key objective for Perseverance‘s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for sign...
