    Kurtulus (Independence) Mosque, formerly the St. Mary‘s Cathedral or Holy Mother of God Church destroyed in Turkey earthquake, in Gaziantep, Turkey, on February 19, 2023. Sarkis Balyan, the Ottoman-Armenian architect serving Sultan Abdul Hamid II designed the church. The building was constructed between 1892 and 1893, undertaken by the stonemason Sarkis Tascıyan. The 7.8-magnitude Turkey-Syria earthquake, which occurred on February 6 at 4:17 a.m. local time, left a trail of destruction in its wake. At least 6,000 buildings have collapsed in Turkey and Syria.
