Papier-mache statues walk through the streets of Angono, Rizal, during the Higantes Festival grand parade on November 20, 2022. After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the locals celebrate their town‘s festival for the first time. The Higantes, or papier-mache giants, were thought to have been created by local farmers during the Spanish colonization era as a form of protest against their landlords. The giant papier-mache puppets range in size from four to five feet in diameter and ten to twelve feet in height, and they can only be controlled from within.
