Second power plant unit to be shut down in Jänschwalde

30 September 2019, Brandenburg, Jänschwalde: The steaming cooling towers of the Jänschwalde lignite-fired power plant of Lausitzer Energie Bergbau AG (LEAG) are reflected in a puddle. According to the operator LEAG, block E is disconnected from the mains at 5 pm. From midnight onwards, no more emissions will be produced and the 500 megawatt block will go into safety readiness. With the closure of the second block, around 600 positions will no longer be filled in the next few years. According to the head of the power plant‘s works council, this applies to both the opencast mine and the power plant. A year ago, Block F was already disconnected from the power grid and has since been on four-year safety alert, at the end of which it will be shut down. Level rises in the Cottbus Baltic Sea

25 March 2020, Brandenburg, Cottbus: The water level is slowly rising in the former opencast lignite mine Cottbus-Nord - the future Cottbus Baltic. In the background you can see the steaming cooling towers of the Jänschwalde lignite power plant. The flooding of the former opencast mine had begun in mid-April 2019. The flooding of the huge pit is to create the so-called Baltic Sea. For this purpose, water will flow from the Spree River via the Hammergraben into the open-cast mine hole - a total of around 45 million cubic metres per year. The huge artificial lake will have a water surface of almost 19 square kilometres. By 2025, the water is expected to have reached the necessary minimum height of 2.70 meters in the middle of the lake. Photo: Patrick Pleul/dpa-Zentralbild/ZB、クレジット:ZB/DPA/共同通信イメージズ
