  • Monkeypox virus particle, TEM
    2008年01月04日
    Monkeypox virus particle, TEM

Monkeypox virus particle, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Monkeypox is a poxvirus that was identified in Cynomolgus monkeys in 1958 and then in humans in 1970. The virus consists of a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) core in a protein coat, or capsid, surrounded by an envelope. The proteins allow the particles to enter and leave host cells. The virus reproduces by entering cells and hijacking their biochemical machinery, producing many copies of itself. Monkeypox is zoonotic, passing from animals (such as rodents) to humans and vice versa. Human infections are often caused by animal bites or from direct contact with infected bodily fluids. There is no proven safe treatment or vaccine for monkeypox (as of 2008). Magnification: x125,000 when printed 10 centimetres tall.

    Monkeypox infection, 1971

Monkeypox infection, 1971. Lesions on the right hand and leg of a 4-year-old girl in Bondua, Grand Gedeh County, Liberia. She has been infected with a pox virus of the vaccinea-variola type. There are numerous maculopapular monkeypox lesions on the patient‘s skin, with a close similarity to the lesions seen in smallpox. The monkeypox virus is found near rainforests in Central and West Africa, causing disease in humans and monkeys, although its natural hosts are rodents. It is capable of human-to-human transmission. In humans it causes fever, swollen glands and a rash of fluid-filled blisters. It is fatal in 10 percent of cases.、クレジット:Science Photo Library/共同通信イメージズ

This characteristic rash appears in the recuperative stage. This virus, which is found near rainforests in Central and West Africa causes disease in humans and monkeys, although its natural hosts are rodents. It is capable of human-to-human transmission. In humans it causes fever, swollen glands and a rash of fluid-filled blisters. It is fatal in 10 percent of cases. In 1996, 71 suspected human monkeypox cases were reported in the DRC. James Nakano, Japanese-US smallpox researcher

James Hiroto Nakano (1922-1990), Japanese-US smallpox researcher, analyzing data while seated at his desk. Nakano designed and directed the USA‘s CDC (Center for Disease Control) smallpox laboratory (completed in 1967) which later evolved into one of the world‘s primary smallpox reference centres. Electron microscopes were the primary method for rapid diagnosis of smallpox, surpassing other methods in speed and reliability. Nakano‘s work demonstrated that no reservoir of smallpox could be maintained in wild animals, and helped differentiate among various pox diseases including monkeypox. His main work was carried out between 1968 and 1985. Nakano became part of the World Health Organization (WHO)‘s global smallpox eradication effort. The CDC‘s prestigious James H. Nakano Citation for outstanding scientific paper, was established in his honour.、クレジット:Science Photo Library/共同通信イメージズ
