    Ukrainian Sich Riflemen

On August 17, 1914, in Lviv, which was then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the “Ukrainian Sich Riflemen“ legion was created. It was formed on a voluntary basis, and its insignia was a yellow-blue banner. The unit was part of the Austrian army and fought, as its organizers stated, “for the liberation of Ukraine.“ In the First World War, snipers took part in battles against the troops of the Entente, in particular Russia. During the revolutionary events of 1917-1919, they supported the UNR and the Directory. In the photo: Yevhen Konovalets - one of the first Sich snipers, later theircommander. Ukraine Donbass War

May 8, 2014, Odessa, Donbass, Ukraine: A woman coming down the stairs, a bouquet of flowers in hand, in the House of Unions. A few days earlier, about forty people were killed in a fire following clashes between pro-Ukrainian and pro-Russian. After the Euromaidan revolution in winter 2013 in Kyiv, then the annexation of Crimea in March by Russia, it is the turn of the Donbass Oblast in eastern Ukraine to fall into chaos between the new government in Kyiv and the pro-Russian separatists. Ukraine, a young country in its fifties, displays a national pride visible to all. The blue and yellow, color of the Ukrainian flag are present everywhere. Kiosks, buses, clothes and banks are all a representation of these national colors. They were adopted in 1918 during the first Ukrainian independence. They are the illustration of the natural elements of Ukraine, the blue symbolizing the sky and the yellow representing the many fields of Blue, one of the main sources of prosperity of the country. We can wonder what will ...

Portraits of young Ukrainians following Maidan uprising in 2014

May 16, 2014, Kyiv, Arizona, Ukraine: BANDERAââ¬Â sported a toughened face that rivaled those of far older men. He is a member of ââ¬ÅThe Iron Hundred,ââ¬Â the self-declared elite of Maidanââ¬â¢s volunteer defense force. The group adopted its name from a legendary undefeated squad that was part of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) fighting against the Soviet Union during World War II. As Maidanââ¬â¢s presence and purpose dwindled, ââ¬ÅBANDERAââ¬Â was one of three remaining members of his once larger, more prominent group. Reserved and unflinching, he refused to reveal his real name or anything about himself, or to be photographed without his mask. May 18, 2014, Kyiv, Arizona, Ukraine: ANASTASIA moved to Kyiv from Crimea shortly after the region was annexed by Russia in March 2014. In June 2014, UNHCR estimated roughly 12,000 Crimean refugees now live in Ukraine. Sitting in front of the tent that has been her home for the past few months, ANASTASIA, 18, talked about how hard it was to simply live a normal life. Having just begun her university studies in psychology, she finds it difficult to stay organized and keep up the work when living out of a tent. Asked to write happiest moment in her life so far and she began: ââ¬ÅFalling in lo-,ââ¬Â then she crossed it out and put ‘‘when I arrived to the Maidan for the first time. May 18, 2014, Kyiv, Arizona, Ukraine: KHARCHENKO, 19, is an economic student who puts himself through school by dressing up as a Panda on Maidan and posing with tourists. Maidan, Kyivââ¬â¢s central square whose name means ââ¬ÅIndependence Square,ââ¬Â had evolved over time from a place of fiery and violent protest to, in part, a theatrical performance site and a tourist attraction. May 20, 2014, Kyiv, Arizona, Ukraine: VADIM, 22, is an unemployed construction worker living at Maidan. At 9.3 percent in 2014, the unemployment rate was the highest it had been in the past five years. The tents and encampments were still up in the Spring of 2014 when I met VADIM, and many of its occupants were homeless or unemployed. Some people remained who were ââ¬Åtrue men and women of Maidan,ââ¬Â but many simply sought a place to sleep and free food to eat. VADIM claimed to have been on living in the square since February. May 20, 2014, Kyiv, Arizona, Ukraine: LEONID, 23, sits on a Styrofoam ball near his campsite in Maidan Nezalezhnosti, Kyiv. With plans to go East to ââ¬Åfight for a free Ukraine,ââ¬Â the happiest moment thus far in LEONIDââ¬â¢s life was when Viktor Yanukovich was removed as Ukraineââ¬â¢s fourth president in February 2014. Following the protests and violent clashes of Maidan, many people recognized that the fight was elsewhere and went to fight in eastern Ukraine. May 21, 2014, Kyiv, Arizona, Ukraine: A competitive dirt-biker, VALERA, 22, stands in the skate park under the Novyi Havanskyi Bridge in Kyiv. When probed about the past events of Maidan and the current situation in the East, he waved the questions off. ââ¬ÅI donââ¬â¢t give a fuck about politics.ââ¬Â VALERA spoke of sports, music, and graffiti, but ended up circling back to the issues of the region, the corruption and untrustworthiness of the media and the death toll from the recent fighting. In Ukraine, it was nearly impossible to avoid discussions of politics and war. Daily it encroached on the minds of every person, even the blasé biker. May 22, 2014, Kyiv, Arizona, Ukraine: MIKHAIL ZHYZNEUSKI, 25, was one of the first three people to have died during protests on January 22, 2014. A native of Belarus, MIKHAIL immigrated to Ukraine in 2005 and died of a gunshot wound to the heart. He was a member of UNA-UNSO, a sometimes controversial Ukrainian nationalist organization that is militantly opposed to Russian influence. At least 110 civilians and 18 police officers were killed during the conflict. (Credit Image: © Cheney Orr/ZUMA Press Wire)、クレジット:©Cheney Orr/ZUMA Press Wire/共同通信イメージズ

May 24, 2014, Kyiv, Arizona, Ukraine: DIANA, 22, and SERHIJ, 25, embrace while wading into the Dnipro River off Hidropark, Kyiv. Across the river lies the center of Kyiv and Maidan, but for these two on Hidropark, the tents and crowds of Khreshchatyk St. are seemingly a world away. Self-described ââ¬Åopen soulsââ¬Â who eat only raw foods, and shared their strawberries and apples, the two friends pursued the enjoyment of every moment of life despite the political uncertainty of the world around them. May 26, 2014, Kryvyi Rih, Arizona, Ukraine: DENIS, 16, sits in his dorm room on graduation day from an orphanage in Kryvyi Rih in central Ukraine. DENIS has been on his own since age 12, having run away from abusive parents. Some 100,000 orphans were living in Ukraineââ¬â¢s 450 orphanages, and another 100,000 living on the streets, according to the non-profit Ukraine Orphan Outreach. DENIS had dreams of getting a good education which he recognized would be a challenge without family support. He hoped to learn more languages and one day wanted to move to Lviv or elsewhere in western Ukraine. The orphanage continued to house and support him and a few other 2014 graduates for another six months, but after that, he was on his own. Portraits of young Ukrainians following Maidan uprising in 2014

May 27, 2014, Kryvyi Rih, Arizona, Ukraine: Fourteen years old and born with HIV, she did not want her name used because of the stigma the disease carries and because no one at her school knows she has it. In all of Europe, Ukraine is the hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Both her parents are deceased. She dreamt of a future family, and a career as a photographer. Though she admitted these goals may be challenges to achieve, she was hopeful for both her own and her countryââ¬â¢s future.
