In an event that was modeled after the celebrations on the Rio Vermelho in Salvador, Bahia, Cariocas honored Iemanjá, the west-African goddess of the sea. The festival praised Brazil‘s most well-known deity with jongo, afoxé, samba, and maracatu music and dances, uniting centennial traditions from both communities, Umbanda and Candomblé.
