September 19, 2011, Fort McMurray, AB, Canada: An oilsands mine facility seen from the air near Fort McMurray, Alta., on September 19, 2011. When Dan Gallagher looks around at his work force, he realizes there are a lot of retirement parties in his company‘s future. âÃúI take a walk around our shop, and around our field services work force, and I can clearly see that demographic. And itâÃôs aging,‘‘ says Gallagher, the CEO of Fort McMurray, Alta.-based Mikisew Group. It‘s a reality that makes Gallagher nervous, considering that Mikisew Group - which specializes in oilsands site services, maintenance, logistics and construction - is already struggling with a shortage of labour to the point that the company is recruiting as far away as Australia just to keep its fleet of equipment moving. ‘‘We‘ve got yellow iron that could be running, but nobody to work on it,‘‘ Gallagher says. June 13, 2017, Fort McMurray, AB, Canada: A heavy hauler trucks transports in the oilsands in Fort McMurray Alta, on June 13, 2017. Alberta‘s New Democrat Opposition says a government review of the program that‘s supposed to ensure oilsands companies can clean up their mines was too private and should have been done in public. Environment critic Marlin Schmidt said Albertans now know even less than before the review of the Mine Financial Security Program began. Alberta‘s United Conservative government wrapped up consultations this month on how industry financially backstops its cleanup obligations. It held a year-long series of meetings with industry and First Nations with no public input. Hundreds of demonstrators protest against Enbridge‘s Line 3 oil pipeline, during a march sponsored by Shut Down DC and Extinction Rebellion.
