Ahead of anniv. of Korea‘s liberation from Japan

Ahead of anniv. of Korea‘s liberation from Japan Visitors look at photos of Korean independence fighters including Hong Beom-do (L, 1st row) at the Independence Hall of Korea in Cheonan, 90 kilometers south of Seoul, on Aug. 13, 2021, two days ahead of the 76th anniversary of Korea‘s liberation from the 1910-45 Japanese colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula. South Korea plans to repatriate the remains of Hong from Kazakhstan on Aug. 15. Hong, who died in Kazakhstan at the age of 75 and is buried at a cemetery in the Kazakh city of Kyzylorda, led a Korean independence army in the 1920 Battle of Bongo-dong that took place in Manchuria, now northeastern China, and marked Korea‘s first major victory against the Japanese colonial power.
