    Ex-Formula 1 pilot Zanardi seriously injured in accident

    FILED - 15 September 2001, Brandenburg, Klettwitz: The racing car of Italian Alex Zanardi (M, Honda Reynard) collides with the car of Canadian Alex Tagliani (l) at the “American Memorial“ on the southern Brandenburg Lausitzring when leaving the pit lane after a spin. Zanardi was flown by helicopter to a special clinic in Doberlug-Kirchhain. Zanardi was seriously injured in a traffic accident in Italy. The 53-year-old Italian with an amputated leg had been riding his handbike near the city of Pienza in Tuscany on Friday when the accident happened, a police spokesperson explained. The Renaissance castle has seen several owners and builders over the past 400 years, was burned down by Swedish troops, served in the 19th century partly as a prison, after 1945 as the seat of the Soviet army, from 1950 the barracked people‘s police, and was finally transferred to the city in 1994 after an unsuccessful search for investors. Since 1999 the castle has been renovated and in 2014 it was the venue of the First Brandenburg State Exhibition “Prussia and Saxony. Scenes of a Neighbourhood“. Since 2017, the museum has had a permanent exhibition entitled “Doberlug and the Saxon Brandenburg“, presenting the history of the monastery, castle and town. The sacral building of the Cistercian monastery of Dobrilugk has belonged to the castle since the 17th century and according to the parish is considered the oldest preserved church of the Cistercian order in the east of Germany. Monks began to build the church around 1184 and 1228 is recorded as the year of church consecration. Today, the monastic congregations of Doberlug in the district of Lower Lusatia use the church.
