    Japanese warrior woman with naginata

Japanese warrior woman with a large Naginata. A naginata is a pole weapon that was traditionally used in Japan by members of the samurai class. Usually it also had a sword-like guard (tsuba) between the blade and shaft as depicted on this card. During the Edo Period, as the naginata became less useful for men on the battlefield, and became a symbol of the social status of women of the samurai class. A functional naginata was often a traditional part of a samurai daughter‘s dowry. Decorated tram in Tokyo, Japan - Anglo-Japanese Alliance

A decorated tram in Tokyo - part of the celebrations following the signing of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance of 1902 and to welcome the arrival of the British Naval contingent to the city. The Alliance was to run for five years before being renewed, was primarily directed against the potential shared menace posed, it was believed, by France and (most probably) Russia in the Far East. The alliance obligated either power to remain neutral if one or other found itself at war. However, should either power be obliged to fight a war against two or more powers, the other signatory was obliged to provide military aid. Cartoon impression of the Russo-Japanese War 1 of 5

Card 1 of 5 - ‘Preliminaries‘. A cartoon interpretation of the Russo-Japanese war, acted out by the principal ruling individuals from the International Community. The War was a conflict that grew out of the rival imperialist ambitions of the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over Manchuria and Korea. The major theatres of operations were Southern Manchuria, specifically the area around the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden, and the seas around Korea, Japan, and the Yellow Sea. Japan inflicted a series of stunning defeats on the Russian Navy, principally at Tsushima in May 1905. In this first card, Tsar Nicolas II and the Japanese Emperor Meiji trade insults and spit at each other whilst the International community stands quite far back from proceedings. Cartoon impression of the Russo-Japanese War 3 of 5

Card 3 of 5 - ‘The Wrestlers‘. A cartoon interpretation of the Russo-Japanese war, acted out by the principal ruling individuals from the International Community. The Russo-Japanese War was a conflict that grew out of the rival imperialist ambitions of the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over Manchuria and Korea. In this third card, Tsar Nicholas II and the Japanese Emperor wrestle with each other whilst the International community watches on, forming up behind the side they are supporting.
