November 27, 2020, Mombasa, Kenya: Miss Phyllis Omido, a Kenyan environmental activist and Goldman Environmental Prize Winner for Africa seen during an environmental workshop in Mombasa. In a groundbreaking judgement earlier this year, Kenya窶冱 Environment and Land Court ordered the government and two private investors to pay Kenya Shillings 1.3 billion (12 million USD) as a compensation to the residents of Owino Uhuru affected by lead poisoning. This was a result of Phyllis and others suing state agencies and the private investors for releasing toxic chemical waste into the environment of Owino Uhuru. The matter has now taken another twist as the government has appealed the courts compensation decision.
