One Last Look from Skylab 2

June 22, 1973 - Earth Atmosphere - During the Skylab 2 crew‘s final fly-around inspection on June 22, 1973, they saw this overhead view of the Skylab space station. It has a single solar panel and a parasol solar shield, rigged to replace the micrometeoroid shield. A mishap in the original Skylab 1 liftoff and orbital insertion resulted in damage: both the second solar panel and the micrometeoroid shield were torn away. When commander Charles “Pete“ Conrad, pilot Paul J. Weitz, and science pilot Joseph P. Kerwin launched to the Skylab space station, the first part of their mission was to make repairs to the station, resulting in a record-breaking spacewalk. In the second half of their mission, Conrad, Weitz, and Kerwin focused on completing as much science as possible, research being the primary goal of Skylab...、クレジット:©NASA/ZUMA Press Wire/共同通信イメージズ

Handout photo dated November 22, 2001 shows Astronaut Frank L. Culbertson (left), Expedition 3 mission commander, and cosmonaut Vladimir N. Dezhurov, flight engineer representing Rosaviakosmos, eat a Thanksgiving meal in the Zvezda Service Module on the International Space Station (ISS). ISS003-E-08151 . Since 1973, astronauts have celebrated Thanksgiving in space, bringing a cherished tradition far beyond Earth. The first Thanksgiving in orbit took place aboard Skylab during the Skylab 4 mission, where astronauts Gerald Carr, Edward Gibson, and William Pogue marked the day with an improvised meal after a spacewalk. Over the years, this tradition has evolved, with crews on shuttles, space stations, and orbiters finding creative ways to honor the holiday. From shrimp cocktail and irradiated turkey aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1985 to tortilla-based meals introduced by Mexican astronaut Rodolfo Neri Vela, culinary adaptations have played a key role...、クレジット:ABACA/共同通信イメージズ

Unlike most of their families and friends on Earth, who probably went through pains to prepare elaborate meals for this festive occasion, the STS-126 and Expedition 18 crewmembers merely needed add water to these prepared packets. 16 November 2018, US, Kennedy Space Center: A light strike on the flame deflector of the Launch Complex 39B illuminates. From this historic pad Orion will fly into the skies. This pad also launched 51 space shuttle missions, Apollo 10, Apollo Soyuz and the Skylab missions. The rehabilitated flame trench and the new flame deflector are exposed to a peak temperature of 2,200 degrees Celsius at the start. More than 96,000 bricks were laid on the walls on the north side of the Flammengraben during the renovation. The flame trench is 450 feet long, which is the length of one and a half American football fields. The flame arrester consists of about 150 steel plates, each weighing up to 4,000 pounds.
