Date: 1810-20, published 1863.After Napoleon‘s invasion of Spain in 1807 and 1808 brought about the abdication of the Spanish king, violent protests against the French erupted in Madrid. The uprising of May 2, 1808, marked the start of the armed Spanish resistance, which dragged on in guerrilla warfare until 1814. During the war, Goya documented his horror and outrage at the atrocities committed by soldiers and patriots in his series of 80 prints ‘The Disasters of War‘. (104.1 x 83.2 cm). Date: 1804.An official in the War Department, Ignacio Garcini wears the uniform of the Corps of Engineers. The embroidered red cross on his coat and the badge of the Order of Santiago are decorations he received in 1806 and must have been added later. After the French invasion of Spain in 1808, Garcini became a collaborator, and in 1811 he wrote the book <i>Chronicle of Spain since the Reign of Charles IV: Account of the Persecution Suffered by Colonel D.
