The Temptation of Christ by the Devil.

The Temptation of Christ by the Devil. Culture: Spanish. Dimensions: 69 1/2 in. × 9 ft. 10 in. (176.5 × 299.7 cm). Date: first half 12th century (possibly 1129-34).The hermitage of San Baudelio de Berlanga was constructed in the beginning of the eleventh century at the heart of the frontier between Islamic and Christian lands. One hundred fifty years later, its extraordinary palm-vaulted interior was transformed with the addition of two cycles of vibrant paintings: an extensive Christological cycle at the top and scenes of hunting and animals at the bottom, derived from Islamic art. The large figures of the biblical cycle, the clear outlines, and the radiant colors ensured that the story would be legible from the floor. The fresco conflates three episodes from Christ‘s Temptation. At the left, the Devil dares Christ to turn stones into bread. In the middle, Satan challenges Christ、クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

The New Testament scenes can be ascribed to a master who worked on the paintings at Santa Maria de Taüll, in the province of Lleida (Lérida). Allegory on the Fidelity of the Lizard (recto); Design for a Stage Setting (verso).

Allegory on the Fidelity of the Lizard (recto); Design for a Stage Setting (verso). Artist: Leonardo da Vinci (Italian, Vinci 1452-1519 Amboise). Dimensions: 7 15/16 x 5 1/4in. (20.2 x 13.3cm). Date: 1496.The exquisite small sketch of a tondo on the recto of the Metropolitan sheet was undoubtedly intended for a medal on a theatrical costume, therefore perhaps related in theme to the verso sketches for the staging of Baldassare Taccone‘s La Danae or another festa. In its type of design and drawing style, the recto drawing on the Metropolitan sheet is closely comparable to two other sheets with small allegorical scenes inscribed within a tondo shape, one in Cambridge (Fitzwilliam Museum inv. PD.120-1961) and the other in Bayonne (Musée Bonnat inv. 656); all three sheets are rendered with the same style of quick, reinforced outlines and delicate parallel-hatching typical of Leonardo‘s draw、クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

The Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist.

The Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist. Artist: Workshop of Fra Bartolomeo (Bartolomeo di Paolo del Fattorino) (Italian, Florence 1473-1517 Florence). Dimensions: 5-7/16 x 4-3/4 in. (13.8 x 12.0 cm). Date: ca. 1515-17.Quickly drawn in black chalk, this study was formerly part of the same sketchbook which likely also included two studies for a Madonna and Child with Infant St. John of almost the same size: one in the Museum‘s collection (no. 80.3.134; black chalk, 14.3 x 11.6 cm) and the other one in The Morgan Library & Museum, New York (inv. IV,8; black chalk, 13.5 x 9.7 cm). Even though the drawings show similarities with Fra‘ Bartolomeo‘s shorthand and late draftsmanship, the three sketchbook sheets should be attributed to a talented member of his workshop, possibly the monk Fra‘ Paolino da Pistoia (1488-1547), who inherited his master‘s drawings and cartoons at his death 、クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

The Head of the Virgin in Three-Quarter View Facing Right, 15101513, Black chalk, charcoal, and red chalk

The Head of the Virgin in Three-Quarter View Facing Right, 15101513, Black chalk, charcoal, and red chalk, with some traces of white chalk (?); some remains of framing outline in pen and brown ink at upper right (not by Leonardo), Sheet: 8 x 6 1/8 in. (20.3 x 15.6 cm), Drawings, Leonardo da Vinci (Italian, Vinci 14521519 Amboise), The verso of this sheet is inscribed with a gray-brown ink ‘.T.‘ that is quite reminiscent of the ‘Melzi-Leoni‘ markings on Leonardos drawings and manuscripts. The study for the head of the Virgin on the recto has sometimes been doubted by scholars ‘ex silentio‘ as being by Leonardo, possibly because its magical beauty renders it suspicious (Walter Vitzthum in 1966 quoted a recent English critics opinion in his support, ‘the drawing makes one think of Walter Paters mind rather than of Leonardos hand‘).、クレジット:Album/quintlox/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

architectural feature from the Doge‘s Palace in Venice

(Detail) architectural feature from the Doge‘s Palace in Venice, Italy. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice. Its two most visible facdes look towards the Venetian Lagoon and St. Mark‘s Square, or rather the Piazzetta. The use of arcading in the lower stories produces an interesting ‘gravity-defying‘ effect. There is also effective use of colour contrasts. largely constructed from 1309 to 1424, designed perhaps by Filippo Calendario. It replaced earlier fortified buildings of which relatively little is known. Giovanni and Bartolomeo Bon created the Porta della Carta in 1442, a monumental late-gothic gate on the Piazzetta side of the palace. This gate leads to a central courtyard. sculpture at the Doge‘s Palace in Venice

(Detail) sculpture at the Doge‘s Palace in Venice, Italy. The palace was badly damaged by a fire on December 20, 1577.、クレジット:World History Archive/ニューズコム/共同通信イメージズ

    Bust-Length Portrait of an Ecclesiastic.

Bust-Length Portrait of an Ecclesiastic. Artist: Carletto Caliari (Italian, Venice 1567/70-1592/96 Venice). Dimensions: Sheet: 11 7/8 x 8 5/16 in. (30.2 x 21.1 cm). Date: 16th century. This portrait shows the sitter, a middle-aged cleric with aquiline nose, short beard and slightly balding, with his intent gaze directed to the upper right (heavenward), to denote his spiritual disposition. The artist was the talented, second-born son of the great painter, Paolo Veronese (1528-1588). Carletto Caliari was a close assistant of his father especially in the late years of the great master; in Venice painting was conducted as a family business. The present drawing bears a very close resemblance to the main saint in Paolo Veronese‘s late canvas of the Conversion of Saint Pantaleon (San Pantaleone, Venice), begun in 1587, and so the drawing was probably inspired by it. 、クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Paul Cézanne: Boy in a Red Vest (Le Garçon au gilet rouge), Paul Cézanne, 18881890, Oil on canvas

Paul Cézanne: Boy in a Red Vest (Le Garçon au gilet rouge), Paul Cézanne, 18881890, Oil on canvas, Cézanne lived in an apartment on the Ile Saint-Louis in Paris between 1888 and 1890. This painting of an Italian boy is one of the many figural works he produced at that location. While we know the boy‘s identityhe was a professional model named Michelangelo de Rosa who posed for Cézanne several timesthe artist didn‘t intend this as a portrait in the traditional sense. Rather, the painting is perhaps better understood as a study in human psychology and emotion. Shoulders slumped, mouth turned down, eyes staring into the distance, the boy seems a picture of melancholy., Overall: 25 3/4 x 21 1/2 in. Paul Cézanne: Still Life with Skull (Nature morte au crâne), Paul Cézanne, 18961898, Oil on canvas

Paul Cézanne: Still Life with Skull (Nature morte au crâne), Paul Cézanne, 18961898, Oil on canvas, Skulls appear frequently in the European still life tradition, serving as reminders of the fleetingness of life. Cézanne tended to avoid such props, however, favoring more ordinary household items like napkins, fruit, and ceramic vessels. It wasn‘t until the last decade of his career that Cézanne began to represent skulls with some regularity--perhaps reflecting a preoccupation with his own mortality. The smudges of orange paint across the eye socket are probably the result of this canvas leaning against another in his Aix-en-Provence studio., Overall: 21 3/8 x 25 3/4 in. Paul Cézanne: Young Man and Skull (Jeune homme à la tête de mort), Paul Cézanne

Paul Cézanne: Young Man and Skull (Jeune homme à la tête de mort), Paul Cézanne, 18961898, Oil on canvas, Seated at a wooden table covered with books, a young man leans on his elbow in a pose recalling Renaissance representations of Melancholia, one of the four humors. Resting on the table across from him is a skull missing its lower jaw. The man and skull gaze past one another: while the object‘s hollow eye sockets stare blankly, its living human counterpart seems lost in thought, perhaps pondering his own mortality. Although skulls appear in some of his early canvases from the 1860sthey were a common studio prop with a long history in still life paintingthe 1897 death of Cézanne‘s mother and his own declining health might have prompted a return to this symbolically loaded object., Overall: 51 3/16 x 38 3/8 in. Paul Cézanne: Trees and Road (Arbres et route), Paul Cézanne, c.

Paul Cézanne: Trees and Road (Arbres et route), Paul Cézanne, c. 1890, Oil on canvas, Rather than depicting a recognizable site or a spectacular view, as had been the tradition in French landscape painting, Cézanne focuses on an ordinary tree next to a road. Trees appear frequently in his work, sometimes as framing devices for a view into the distance, but more often as the main subject. Here, scraggly branches reach across the canvas as distant foliage is abstracted into a screen of broad, flat marks. Cézanne probably painted this scene on or near his family‘s property outside of Aix-en-Provence., Overall: 28 3/4 x 23 5/8 in. Venus and Adonis.

Venus and Adonis. Artist: Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, Siegen 1577-1640 Antwerp). Dimensions: With added strips, 77 3/4 x 95 5/8 in. (197.5 x 242.9 cm). Date: probably mid-1630s.The subject is from Ovid‘s Metamorphoses (completed 8 A.D). Accidently pricked by one of Cupid‘s arrows, Venus fell in love with the handsome hunter Adonis. Rubens shows their leave-taking--a Renaissance embellishment famously depicted by Titian (see his canvas in Gallery 607). With manly indifference to the goddess‘s charms and her warnings of danger, Adonis hunted a wild boar and was gored to death. Except for its conclusion, the story was well suited to decorate grand country houses, where the chase occupied noblemen indoors and out. Chief Etchers and Best Italian (Wilton House Album).

Chief Etchers and Best Italian (Wilton House Album). Date: early 18th century binding. The Metropolitan Museum acquired five albums from the 1917 sale (Sotheby‘s July 6th) of the ‘historical collections at Wilton House, Salisbury, the property of the Right Hon. The Earl of Pembroke & Montgomery‘, all of which were disassembled and integrated into the collection, now forming a large part of the Italian print collection. The albums possibly originated with Thomas Herbert, eighth earl of Pembroke (1656-1733) and by descent to Reginald Herbert, fifteenth earl of Pembroke (British, 1880-1960) who sold the collection. Although the albums were taken apart, their original contents can be identified by the accession numbers (17.50.15 - 17.50.19). In 1927, the MMA acquired from Colnaghi a sixth album (the present album) which was vol. VI from the original set of seventeen albums、クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。
