Date: 1858-9.In 1856, while studying theology at Oxford, the twenty-three-year-old Burne-Jones toured Gothic cathedrals in France with his friend William Morris, consulted with Dante Gabriel Rossetti in London, and decided to leave college and pursue art. John Ruskin advised him to look closely at Albrecht Dürer, and the present drawing demonstrates the influence of that German master, combined with aspects of Rossetti‘s distinct draftsmanship and vision of female beauty. Thomas Malory‘s chivalric poem “La Morte D‘Arthur“ describes Alice la Belle Pèlerine (Alice the beautiful pilgrim) as “passing fair“ and notes that her moniker came courtesy of her father, Duke Ansirus who “was a great pilgrim, for every third year he would be at Je、クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Rossetti lamenting the death of his wombat, 1869.

Rossetti lamenting the death of his wombat, 1869. Dante Gabriel Rossetti loved exotic animals and began to collect them with a passion after the tragic death of his wife Elizabeth Siddal in 1862. He had moved to 16 Cheyne Walk in Chelsea, a house with a large garden that soon became a miniature zoo. The wombats had a special place in Rossetti‘s heart. In a letter to his brother he described the arrival of the first one as ‘a Joy, a Triumph, a Delight, a Madness‘. This drawing commemorates the short-lived second wombat. Instead of being laid to rest in the handsome tomb we see here, the unfortunate marsupial was actually stuffed and placed in Rossetti‘s entrance hall. PD, 1939-5-13-6. Author: DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI. Location: British Museum, London, Great Britain.、クレジット:Erich Lessing/Album/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

    A Seated Couple, Embracing.

A Seated Couple, Embracing. Artist: Sir Edward Burne-Jones (British, Birmingham 1833-1898 Fulham). Dimensions: sheet: 13 3/16 x 9 15/16 in. (33.5 x 25.2 cm). Date: ca. 1865.Burne-Jones likely made this drawing in the mid-1860s when he was sketching the Parthenon marbles at the British Museum, using chalks on colored paper. While a student at Oxford, Burne-Jones and his close friend William Morris decided to give up their theology degrees and instead pursue artistic careers. Since he lacked formal training, Burne-Jones sought advice from Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Ruskin--who lent him prints by Albrecht Dürer to copy--and George Frederic Watts, who advised close study of classical sculpture. Here he develops a figural composition from his interaction with Greek models.
