Date: 1496.The exquisite small sketch of a tondo on the recto of the Metropolitan sheet was undoubtedly intended for a medal on a theatrical costume, therefore perhaps related in theme to the verso sketches for the staging of Baldassare Taccone‘s La Danae or another festa. In its type of design and drawing style, the recto drawing on the Metropolitan sheet is closely comparable to two other sheets with small allegorical scenes inscribed within a tondo shape, one in Cambridge (Fitzwilliam Museum inv. Date: ca. 1525-27.Cranach often treated the theme of Venus and Cupid, but this excellently preserved panel is the only version in a round format. Playing coquettishly with her veil and glancing at the viewer, Venus ignores Cupid, who is agitated by the situation. His arrow is missing, suggesting that he has been disarmed and is powerless against his mother. The picture was likely intended for display in a personal <i>studiolo</i>. Cranach might have painted the roundel not on commission but on speculation, to be sold to discerning collectors already conditioned by the tradition of medals and plaquettes to appreciate such refined work.     Bust-Length Portrait of an Ecclesiastic. Artist: Carletto Caliari (Italian, Venice 1567/70-1592/96 Venice). Dimensions: Sheet: 11 7/8 x 8 5/16 in. (30.2 x 21.1 cm). Date: 16th century.This portrait shows the sitter, a middle-aged cleric with aquiline nose, short beard and slightly balding, with his intent gaze directed to the upper right (heavenward), to denote his spiritual disposition. The artist was the talented, second-born son of the great painter, Paolo Veronese (1528-1588). Carletto Caliari was a close assistant of his father especially in the late years of the great master; in Venice painting was conducted as a family business. By 1621 the painting was owned by Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, along with other mythological works by the artist (two are in the Frick Collection, New York), but its original owner is unknown. A masterpiece of light and color, works such as this had an enduring impact on later artists including Velázquez and Giambattista Tiepolo. This is one of three monumental bathing scenes that Cézanne produced at the very end of his career. The theme of bathers in a landscape originated in the Renaissance and traditionally showed idealized female bodies in total harmony with nature. Here, Cézanne disturbs this easy relationship. In the foreground, Emperor Decius—identified by a crown and scepter—has condemned the saint to die by roasting on a gridiron.
