Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Readies for Pacific Circumnavigation Departure

April 15, 2023, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA: NAINOA THOMPSON (right) is president of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and a Pwo (Caroline Island master) navigator. In the early 1970s THOMPSON sought out the guidance of Micronesian master navigator MAU PIAILUG to learn the traditional methods of navigation lost to the people of Hawaii due to colonization initiated by New England missionaries and culminating in the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy by American business interests under threat of arms. THOMPSON is a direct descendent of KAMEHAMEHA I, the first ruler of the united Hawaiian Islands and is widely decorated for his expeditions and teaching of seafaring navigation and aloha ainaâthe Hawaiian tradition of stewardship and love of land and ocean. April 15, 2023, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA: Hokulea master navigator NAINOA THOMPSON addressees well-wishers assembled to see the canoe off on its voyage to circumnavigate the Pacific to raise awareness of the requirement to steward the earth in the epoch of climate change. Thompson says, âMaking a promise and a bet wonât [bring Hokulea] home. But Iâll argue, though, that we might leave this dock tomorrow, but we are not leaving home. Because we need to understand that home is the earth and we all have kuleana [responsibility, obligation] to that earth.â (Credit Image: © J. Matt/ZUMA Press Wire)、クレジット:©J.
