UNHCR evacuates refugees from Libya to Niger

FILED - 27 May 2019, Libya, Niamey: A billboard near the presidential palace shows portraits of Issoufou Mahamadou, president of Niger, and Angela Merkel, chancellor. The Chancellor visited the West African state at the beginning of May 2019. The UNHCR had evacuated numerous refugees from politically unstable Libya to bring them to safety in Niger. They were rescued from the worst conditions in Libya and brought to Niger with the promise of being resettled in Europe. But many migrants there would have to stay in Limbo for months or even years before they could ever set foot on European soil.
