House cleaning in famous anatomical collection

03.09.2018, Saxony-Anhalt, Halle/Saale: In her laboratory in the Meckels collections of the Institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, the medical taxidermist Julia Hallasch removes internal organs of a porpoise over 100 years old from a preserving glass. The preparation belongs to several hundred 18th century collection pieces, which are currently watered after they have been removed and placed in cleaned glasses filled with 70% alcohol and provided with new labels. The teaching and research collection, which includes around 8000 human and animal specimens, was established in the 18th century by the Meckel family of physicians and is one of the most important of its kind in Europe.
