Born into a wealthy New York family, he was educated at Harvard and in Europe at Gottingen, Germany, where he studied under well known physicists such as Rutherford, Heisenberg and Dirac. In 1943 he was nominated director of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, in New Mexico, where the first atomic bomb was constructed. From 1943 to 1953 he served as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. In 1953 his political background and support for the H-bomb project were questioned, and his security clearance was revoked ending his Government work. View of J. R. Oppenheimer and J. Von Neumann

    J. Robert Oppenheimer and John Von Neumann. View of two of the principal members of the Manhattan Project, J. R. Oppenheimer (left, 1904-1967) and John Von Neumann (right, 1903-1957). This project was started in 1942, in Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA, in order to develop, construct and test the atomic bomb. The American physicist Oppenheimer, who studied under well known physicists such as Rutherford, Heisenberg and Dirac, was nominated director of the Manhattan Project in 1943. The Hungarian-American mathematician Von Neumann was an expert in hydrodynamics. His knowledge was of great importance in the design of the implosion device used for the plutonium bomb.、クレジット:SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/共同通信イメージズ

Oppenheimer studied at Harvard, USA, and Gottingen, Germany, working with renowned physicists such as Dirac, Bohr and Heisenberg. In 1943, he became director of the Manhattan Project, Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA, where the first atomic bomb was constructed. He opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, losing his security rating in the anti-communist hysteria of 1954. In 1963, he was reinstated and received the Fermi Award. Robert Oppenheimer, US physicist

Julius Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967), US physicist, with an atomic bomb mushroom cloud. Oppenheimer studied in the USA and Germany with renowned physicists such as Dirac, Bohr and Heisenberg. In 1943, he became director of the Manhattan Project, Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA, where the first atomic bomb was constructed. On its detonation on 16 July 1945, Oppenheimer reportedly recalled a Bhagavad Gita quote: ‘Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds‘. He opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, losing his security rating in the anti-communist hysteria of 1954. In 1963, he was reinstated, receiving the Fermi Award.、クレジット:SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/共同通信イメージズ
