architectural feature from the Doge‘s Palace in Venice

(Detail) architectural feature from the Doge‘s Palace in Venice, Italy. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice. Its two most visible facdes look towards the Venetian Lagoon and St. Mark‘s Square, or rather the Piazzetta. The use of arcading in the lower stories produces an interesting ‘gravity-defying‘ effect. There is also effective use of colour contrasts. largely constructed from 1309 to 1424, designed perhaps by Filippo Calendario. It replaced earlier fortified buildings of which relatively little is known. Giovanni and Bartolomeo Bon created the Porta della Carta in 1442, a monumental late-gothic gate on the Piazzetta side of the palace. This gate leads to a central courtyard. The palace was badly damaged by a fire on December 20, 1577.、クレジット:World History Archive/ニューズコム/共同通信イメージズ

Stone statue of Kurlil From Tell al-‘Ubaid, southern Iraq, Early Dynastic period, about 2500 BC. Found next to the Temple of Ninhursag. limestone statue was excavated in 1919 besides the ruins of the temple at Tell al-‘Ubaid dedicated to the Sumerian fertility goddess Ninhursag. A very damaged sculpture was found alongside it, with only the upper part of the body surviving. A cuneiform inscription identifies it as Kurlil, an official in the city of Uruk who had dedicated the image to the goddess Damkina at Tell al-‘Ubaid. A cuneiform sign on the right shoulder of this statue, though very worn, can be identified as part of Kurlil‘s name.、クレジット:World History Archive/ニューズコム/共同通信イメージズ

    The Crucifixion; The Last Judgment.

The Crucifixion; The Last Judgment. Artist: Jan van Eyck (Netherlandish, Maaseik ca. 1390-1441 Bruges) and Workshop Assistant. Dimensions: Each 22 1/4 x 7 2/3 in. (56.5 x 19.7 cm). Date: ca. 1440-41.Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, considered Van Eyck (his court painter) unequalled in his “art and science.“ In fact, Van Eyck‘s expansive yet microcosmic paintings seem observed through both a microscope and a telescope. In The Crucifixion, he evokes a remarkable range of emotions among the crowds, seen against a landscape depicting an imagined Jerusalem; in 1426 he made a trip across the Alps during a diplomatic mission to Italy and the Holy Lands. He gives an equally palpable form to the horrors of the Last Judgment. The frames are original, with damaged inscriptions in Latin and Middle Dutch.
