    A Sermon in a Village Church. Artist: Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, Siegen 1577-1640 Antwerp). Dimensions: 16 5/8 x 22 9/16 in. (42.2 x 57.3 cm). Date: ca. 1630.This sheet, a relatively recent addition to Rubens‘s drawn oeuvre, is exceptional in several ways. Even if it seems to have been slightly cropped (especially at the left and the top), it remains one of the artist‘s largest works on paper. Its technique is much richer than that of most of his other drawings, combining chalk and paints, and gives the work the appearance of an oil sketch. The subject matter may be considered unique for Rubens. El general Carl Heinrich von Wedel, comandante del ejército prusiano, atacó a un ejército ruso mucho mayor en número, que dirigía el Conde Pyotr Saltykov. Ambos bandos sufrieron numerosas pérdidas. Tras la batalla, Federico II de Prusia quiso obligar a los rusos a un compromiso para evitar que se unieran al grueso del ejército austríaco. No consiguió su objetivo ya que tres semanas más tarde los prusianos se encontraron con el ejército combinado de rusos y austríacos en Kunesrsdorf. Possibly a second-century marble copy of a bronze original by the Greek sculptor Leochares, the statue was immediately appreciated as a masterpiece and showered with praise. Probably once in the private collection of Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere (later Pope Julius II, r. 1503-13), it was moved to the Vatican in 1509 and placed, in 1511, in the Cortile del Belvedere, from which it derives its name. Raimondi‘s print became an important vehicle through which knowledge of the statue was transmitted far beyond the Vatican. The greatest blemish is the roads, which used to be rough, stony, and narrow; but are now much mended and improved on every side of the town, to its very great advantage, and to the honour of several worthy gentlemen, who cheerfully contributed to so good a work.“ Much, however, remained to be done; the famous city of Caer-Medwag continued to our own day to be almost an isolated place. The roads, generally, were “soft,“ and the only good ones were rendered comparatively valueless by the steep hills in their course. The reproach of Maidstone is now wiped away.
