The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is an Oglala Lakota reservation in South Dakota. Pine Ridge was created in 1889 is the eighth-largest reservation in the US and also the poorest. The population suffers from numerous health conditions with limited access to health care compared to urban areas. Unemployment is over 80 percent with half of the population living below the federal poverty level. On Dec 29, 1989 the U.S. 7th Calvary Regiment indiscriminately massacred between 150-300 men, women, and children. The Wounded Knee Massacre Battlefield has been designated a National Historic Landmark. In Feb 21, 1973, the Wounded Knee Incident, a 71-day armed confrontation between Pine Ridge activists and U.S. law enforcement resulted in the deaths of several people.
