Bartholomew I is the spiritual leader of the Eastern Orthodox Christians worldwide. Since November 2, 1991, he has served as the 270th Archbishop of Constantinople and Ecumenical Patriarch. Also, the Greek church, which is the only one actively hosting the Orthodox community in Izmir, is a very symbolic and important church, especially for Greeks.
