The activists have poured fluorescein into several fountains in the city. The state has decided to bury 42,000 tons of waste classified as 0 and 1 in the former potash mines in Wittelsheim. This waste has been stored under the largest water table in Europe since 1999, risking affecting more than 7 million people, and impacting the local fauna and flora in Alsace, Germany and Switzerland. Moreover, there would be a seismic risk. The mine is weakened, cracked and collapsing on itself. Numerous studies have shown that the destocking was still possible and a good number of associations, communities and elected officials have been asking for the destocking of the site for about twenty years.
