Chimpanzee, species of ape that, along with the bonobo, is most closely related to humans. The chimpanzee also known as simply the chimp, is native to the forest and savannah of tropical Africa. All four-chimpanzee subspecies are endangered. They live in hierarchical social groups of up to 150 individuals, held together by the strong bonds between male chimpanzees. The main threats to chimpanzees are habitat loss, disease, and hunting, especially for bushmeat. Currently there are an estimated 1,000 chimpanzees kept in zoos around the world.
