Landscape at Saint-Ouen.

Landscape at Saint-Ouen. Artist: Georges Seurat (French, Paris 1859-1891 Paris). Dimensions: Overall 6 7/8 x 10 3/8 in. (17.5 x 26.4 cm); painted surface 6 5/8 x 10 in. (16.8 x 25.4 cm). Date: 1878 or 1879.Dated to 1878 or 1879, this is the earliest known of Seurat‘s landscape oil sketches. His good friend, the artist Aman-Jean, remembered him painting it on site at Saint-Ouen, a northern suburb of Paris. Seurat introduced warm, orangey-brown hues into the composition by allowing the wood panel support to show through between his brushstrokes. This work was originally part of a double-sided panel that was divided after 1950 into two separate pictures. The other side, now in the Musée d‘Orsay, Paris, features a landscape with a copy after Puvis de Chavannes‘s The Poor Fisherman (1881; Musée d‘Orsay). Île aux Fleurs near Vétheuil. Artist: Claude Monet (French, Paris 1840-1926 Giverny). Dimensions: 26 x 32 in. (66 x 81.3 cm). Date: 1880.This is one of two views of the Île aux Fleurs, an island in the Seine near Vétheuil, that Monet painted in the summer of 1880. The other, slightly larger version is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. A variety of formal problems engaged the artist‘s attention during this period. Here the rapid, flickering brushstrokes create a strong pattern in the foreground that diminishes the illusion of space and emphasizes the abstract character of the painted surface. Apple blossoms.

Apple Blossoms. Artist: Charles-François Daubigny (French, Paris 1817-1878 Paris). Dimensions: 23 1/8 x 33 3/8 in. (58.7 x 84.8 cm). Date: 1873.Critic Théophile Gautier extolled Daubigny‘s landscapes as “pieces of nature cut out and set into golden frames.“ The artist first painted flowering orchards about 1857, reprising the motif almost every spring. His unpretentious subject matter, rendered with rapid, summary brushstrokes, soon earned the admiration of younger colleagues like Monet. By the time of this canvas in 1873, Daubigny, had, in turn, assimilated their high-keyed palette, evident in the vivid green foliage and bright blue sky. That same year, Monet painted two views of blossoming fruit trees, one of which is in the Metropolitan‘s collection (26.186.1). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. キーワード:ピエール=オーギュスト・ルノワール、Pierre-Auguste Renoir: Cup of Chocolate (Femme prenant du chocolat), Pierre-Auguste Renoir, c. 1912, Oil on canvas, Figures sitting at café tables were a frequent subject for impressionist painters interested in the bustling public life of modern Paris. This canvas, however, does not quite fit into that category. Renoir painted it well after his impressionist years were over, when he was living in the rural countryside of southern France. The painting shows a casually dressed figure stirring a cup of hot chocolate; lost in reverie, slumping forward, she is conveys dreamy inwardness rather than public sociability. The model is Gabrielle Renard, who worked as a nursemaid for the Renoir family and often modeled for the artist; here she is probably posing in his studio. Date: 1874.This view shows one of the roads connecting the hamlet of Valhermeil in Auvers with Pontoise, the village northwest of Paris where Pissarro lived for many years. Between 1873 and 1882, he painted some twenty works in this area, several featuring the same red-roofed house. The subject, villagers walking on paths through the French countryside, was one of the artist‘s favorites, reflecting his interest in the pulse of daily rural life. Made in 1874, the year of the first Impressionist exhibition, this picture demonstrates Pissarro‘s adaptation of the looser touch, broken brushstrokes, and lighter palette of younger colleagues like Monet. Date: 1876.In 1876, Monet made no less than ten paintings of his rented house and garden at Argenteuil. This canvas may be among the ones he painted in June, when he was working on “a series of rather interesting new things.“ Madame Monet seems incidental in comparison to the impressive stand of hollyhocks in the middle of the composition. Date: 1894.Monet painted more than thirty views of Rouen Cathedral in 1892-93. Moving from one canvas to another as each day progressed, he painted the facade with highly textured brushstrokes that convey the aspect of sculpted stone and make the atmosphere and light palpable. Monet later finished the works in his studio at Giverny, carefully adjusting the pictures both independently and in relation to each other. Hence, most are signed and dated 1894, as is this example. Eugene Boudin (1824-1898) Harbour Scene

Eugene Boudin (1824-1898) Harbour Scene, oil on canvas. Boudin has captured the maze of masts and rigging along the quaysides of a Northern French harbour. The grey sky and leaden sea are rendered with a sense of constant movement, animated by breaking up the water‘s surface into single brushstrokes. The perspective is focused on a ship in the middle distance, thereby closing off the background beyond and keeping the picture space narrow.、クレジット:World History Archive/ニューズコム/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用に関してはお問合せください。

In Search of the Aztec Tomb

02 December 2019, Mexico, Mexiko-Stadt: The archaeologist Antonio Marin shows the remains of falcons, dressed as warriors with golden badges and spearheads, found in an offering to the god Huitzilopochtli. Five metres below the hustle and bustle of Mexico City, archaeologists are crouching on earth. With fine brushstrokes they uncover the offerings of the Aztecs. More than 500 years have already passed since the empire flourished - now researchers could discover a tomb of an Aztec ruler for the first time.
