The greatest muralist of his time, Puvis carried out many important decorations for public buildings in France. The Boston project, a cycle of nine murals, was his first and only commission in the United States and represents the spheres of human knowledge contained in the library‘s holdings. Here we see the Greek poet Aeschylus reading the script of his tragedy, ‘Prometheus Bound.‘ The climactic scene unfolds behind him, as the titan Prometheus, who stole fire from the Gods, is punished by being chained to a rock and having his liver consumed daily by an eagle.
