MAY 18, 1944 THE MASS DEPORTATION OF CRIMEAN TATARS FROM THE CRIMEA BEGAN

Deportation from Crimea in 1944 is the greatest tragedy of the Crimean Tatar people. After the liberation of Crimea from German troops, Stalin decided to deport all Crimean Tatars, who were accused of allegedly helping the fascists. By his order, deportation began on May 18, 1944. Only 60 hours were allotted for this operation. During this time, 187,859 people were deported from Crimea in 71 echelons. As a result of the terrible conditions of transportation and resettlement, about 46 percent of the Crimean Tatar people died. The bulk of the deported citizens were the elderly, women and children. About five thousand Crimean Tatars were sent to the disposal of “Moscow Coal“ to work in mines and peat development. About 70% of the emigrants were sent to special settlements in the Uzbek USSR, the rest - to Mariysk ASSR. Gorky, Sverdlovsk, Kostroma regions of the RSFSR.
