It is one of three codices that record the genealogies, alliances and conquests of several 11th and 12th-century rulers of a small Mixtec city-state in highland Oaxaca, the Tilantongo kingdom, especially under the leadership of the warrior Lord Eight Deer Jaguar Claw (who died early twelfth century at the age of fifty-two). The Codex Zouche-Nuttall was made in the 14th century. The codex probably reached Spain in the 16th century. It was first identified at the Monastery of San Marco, Florence, in 1854 and was sold in 1859.     Madonna and Child. Artist: Francesco Granacci (Francesco di Andrea di Marco) (Italian, Villamagna 1469-1543 Florence). Dimensions: 34 1/8 x 25 3/8 in. (86.7 x 64.5 cm). Date: ca. 1520.The composition of this picture seems to have been inspired from a sculpture in low relief, most likely by either Donatello or Michelangelo (Granacci had been a fellow pupil with Michelangelo in the workshop of Ghirlandaio.). However, Granacci has made the composition more pictorial by placing the figures in a light-filled room. Another version of the picture by Granacci exists and the same composition was treated by Bacchiacca (Linsky Collection, the Metropolitan Museum). The present picture dates about 1520. The chasm, down which the river Llugy is here precipitated, is sixty feet wide. The wild magnificence of the overhanging trees, the dark colour of the rocks, and the rugged hollows into which the water falls, all add to the im¬pressiveness and grandeur of the scene. Tradition states that the spirit of Sir John Wynn, of Gwvdir who died in 1626, after a life of much wrong and cruelty, is con¬demned to remain beneath the waters of the lower Fall, where loud shrieks of agony may oftentimes be heard.
