Study of a Young Woman.

Study of a Young Woman. Artist: Johannes Vermeer (Dutch, Delft 1632-1675 Delft). Dimensions: 17 1/2 x 15 3/4 in. (44.5 x 40 cm). Date: ca. 1665-67.This may be one of the three paintings by Vermeer that were described in an Amsterdam auction of 1696 as “A ‘face‘ in an antique dress, uncommonly artful.“ Although a live model must have been employed, the artist‘s goal was not portraiture but a study of character and expression. Dutch pictures of this type, called tronies, often feature curious costumes and artistic effects, such as the fall of light on fine fabrics, soft skin, or a pearl earring. Date: 1653.The Three Crosses, one of Rembrandt‘s finest works in any medium, represents the culmination of his virtuosity as a printmaker. He drew on the copperplate entirely in drypoint which allowed him to fully exploit the velvety areas of burr raised by the drypoint tool as it cut into the copper. When Rembrandt created this impression, he deliberately left ink on the printing plate; it lightly veils the figures standing at the foot of the cross on the right; a thicker layer almost completely covers the bushes along the right edge. クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Head of a Bearded, Young Man in Profile Facing Right.

Head of a Bearded, Young Man in Profile Facing Right. Artist: Bronzino (Agnolo di Cosimo di Mariano) (Italian, Monticelli 1503-1572 Florence). Dimensions: 8 1/4 x 6 1/4 in. (21 x 15.8 cm). Date: 1545-55.This delicately drawn study portrays the bearded head of a youthful man of Apollonian beauty that might have been used to represent the figure of Christ. The modeling of the shadows is seamlessly blended, with a masterful use of the technique of stumping, or rubbing in, of the individual strokes of soft black chalk. Applied to brilliant effect by Michelangelo in the 1530s and 1540s, this drawing technique with black chalk was greatly emulated by Florentine Mannerist artists of the following decade, and foremost by Agnolo Bronzino. The head seen here recalls those in the Medici tapestries on the story of Joseph, which were designed by Bronzino between 1549-50 and 1553. Date: ca. 1515-17.Quickly drawn in black chalk, this study was formerly part of the same sketchbook which likely also included two studies of almost the same size: one for a Holy Family in the Museum‘s collection (no. 80.3.135; black chalk, 14.3 x 11.6 cm) and the other one for a Madonna and Child with the Infant St. John in The Morgan Library & Museum, New York (inv. IV,8; black chalk, 13.5 x 9.7 cm). Even though the drawings show similarities with Fra‘ Bartolomeo‘s shorthand, the three sketchbook sheets should be attributed to a talented member of his workshop, possibly the monk Fra‘ Paolino da Pistoia (1488-1547), who inherited his master‘s drawings and cartoons at his death in 1517.

Sheet of Figure Studies and Ornamental Motifs (recto and verso). Artist: Vincenzo Tamagni (Italian, San Gimignano 1492-ca. 1530 San Gimignano). Dimensions: Overall: 8 3/16 x 13 1/8 in. (20.8 x 33.3 cm). Date: 1520-35.Acquired by the Museum as ‘Anonymous Florentine,‘ this double-sided sheet from a dismembered sketchbook reveals stylistic elements closely indebted to the Roman vocabulary of Raphael and the young Polidoro da Caravaggio. Tamagni, who was born in San Gimignano (and probably trained by Sebastiano Mainardi) retained a Tuscan sense of sculptural ‘disegno,‘ but whose graphic vocabulary appears transformed by contact with Raphael‘s ‘bottega‘ in Rome ca. 1512-1520, as it attained a new measure of Classical monumentality. While this sketchbook page is not easily datable, it is plausibly from 1515-1530, and perhaps even from the mid-to-late 1520s.

Date: ca. 1890.Beckwith studied painting in Paris with the French portraitist Carolus-Duran (1837-1917), who also taught John Singer Sargent. Carolus-Duran encouraged his students to search for artistic role models among the great masters of the past. Beckwith suggests his admiration for the Renaissance painter Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) by using a print of the lower portion of his Madonna in Glory with Saint Sebastian and Other Saints (Church of San Sebastiano, Venice) as a backdrop for this portrait sketch. Beckwith‘s use of Italian art signifies his own sophistication and erudition, and it may also suggest that the young woman (model Minnie Clark) is a modern Madonna. Date: 1874.Manet summered at Gennevilliers in 1874, often spending time with Monet and Renoir across the Seine at Argenteuil, where Boating was painted. Beyond adopting the lighter touch and palette of his younger Impressionist colleagues, Manet exploits the broad planes of color and strong diagonals of Japanese prints to give inimitable form to this scene of outdoor leisure. Rodolphe Leenhoff, the artist‘s brother-in-law, is thought to have posed for the sailor but the identity of the woman is uncertain.Shown in the Salon of 1879, Boating was deemed “the last word in painting“ by Mary Cassatt, who recommended the acquisition to the New York collectors Louisine and H.O. Havemeyer. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.、クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

    Crowd at the Seashore.

Crowd at the Seashore. Artist: William James Glackens (American, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1870-1938 Westport, Connecticut). Dimensions: 25 x 30 in. (63.5 x 76.2 cm). Date: ca. 1910.Like his fellow urban realists, Glackens was drawn to Coney Island, and this painting may depict the democratic throngs that gathered there. The number and variety of beachgoers suggest the socioeconomic diversity of New York, and imbue the painting with a lively, modern spirit. To heighten the scene‘s energy, Glackens used a vibrant palette and vigorous brushwork, applying saturated oranges and blues to evoke the midday sun‘s heat and glare. Beach scenes became a popular theme for Glackens, especially as a way to experiment with a certain kind of impressionist painting, inspired by Auguste Renoir, who his friend Albert Barnes collected in depth. Date: 1892.In late 1891 or early 1892 Renoir was invited by the French government to execute a painting for a new museum in Paris, the Musée du Luxembourg, which was to be devoted to the work of living artists. He chose as his subject two girls at the piano. Aware of the intense scrutiny to which his submission would be subjected, Renoir lavished extraordinary care on this project, developing and refining the composition in a series of five canvases. The Lehman painting and the nearly identical version formerly in the collection of Renoir‘s fellow Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte have long been regarded as the most accomplished variants of this intimate and engaging scene of bourgeois domestic life.

Date: 1874.Pissarro‘s paintings of the mid-1870s are largely devoted to the fields and roads near his home in Pontoise. Here, he turned to a more urban subject, of the type favored by colleagues such as Monet and Renoir: the town‘s public garden. The view across the Montmorency plain toward Paris may be glimpsed at left, beyond the spire of Pontoise‘s Notre-Dame church. But rather than emphasizing the vista, Pissarro focused on the park‘s terraces, populated by well-dressed bourgeois and their children. He exhibited a similar scene, painted the year previously (State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg), at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. Date: 1878.In the 1860‘s, Sisley met Pissarro, Monet, Bazille, and Renoir, with whom he brought forth the practice of painting directly from nature. Exhibiting with the Impressionists, as they were formally named at the time of their independent exhibition in Paris in 1874, Sisley enjoyed short-lived but considerable success during the 1870‘s. While residing in Sèvres with his wife and children, Sisley painted this view of a curved pathway lined with chestnut trees in full bloom. The pathway follows a bend in the Seine, lending the viewer access across the pictorial space. The weather is pleasant, the sky a crisp pale blue, and the grass bending softly in the wind. Unlike other Impressionists who returned to their studios、クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。

Still Life with Flowers and Prickly Pears. Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 28 7/8 x 23 3/8 in. (73.3 x 59.4 cm). Date: ca. 1885.This picture is closely related to Still Life: Flowers, 1885 (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York), which depicts the same vase--with its distinctive elephant-head handles--and wood table or dresser. Featuring an autumnal bouquet and Cézannesque arrangement of prickly pears, the present still life was likely painted the same year, in the wake of a visit with Cézanne that summer. At this time, Renoir sought to combine the luminosity of Impressionism with a greater degree of classicism, prompting him to explore techniques that would emulate the dry, light colors of Italian frescoes, which have led to some surface cracks. Date: ca. 1852-57.Several artists ventured portraits of Mathilde Desportes, including the popular academician Jean-Jacques Henner (1829-1905), but her husband, Auguste Cuoq, found most of them unacceptable. This likeness was among those he rejected, reportedly because he felt that it did not adequately convey his wife‘s beauty. Courbet appears to have finished the picture to his own satisfaction in 1857, the date he assigned it in the catalogue of the solo exhibition he mounted in Paris in 1867. Printer: Printed by Charles Motte (French, 1785-1836). Date: 1821.Like many young painters at work in Paris in the 1820s and 1830s, Delacroix tried out the relatively new printmaking process of lithography by making caricatures for the popular press. Such prints were usually created by drawing with a lithographic crayon directly on a block of limestone. However, in this instance, Delacroix‘s design was retraced and transferred from paper to stone by means of red chalk applied to the back of the drawing sheet. Reversed in the process of printing, the caricature pays homage to the composer Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868), shown balancing leading characters from his operas Otello, Rosina, and Barber of Seville over his head.

Saints Peter, Martha, Mary Magdalen, and Leonard. Artist: Correggio (Antonio Allegri) (Italian, Correggio, active by 1514-died 1534 Correggio). Dimensions: 87 1/4 x 63 3/4 in. (221.6 x 161.9 cm). Date: ca. 1515.This is an early work by one of the most original geniuses of the Renaissance. Commissioned for a church in Correggio‘s hometown, it depicts four saints chosen by the patron, Melchiore Fassi: Peter, with his keys; Martha, her dragon; Mary Magdalen, her pot of ointment; and Leonard, with his fetters. Each stands separately, absorbed in his or her own thoughts. In this altarpiece, Correggio explored ideas he admired in the work of Leonardo da Vinci--in particular, the elegantly choreographed poses of the figures softly lit against a dense copse of trees (note the woodpecker). Date: ca. 1609.Rubens painted studies of heads after live models and artistic sources, creating a cast of characters that served in turn as models for figures in religious and mythological works. The main figure here became a saint in a great altarpiece of 1609, a high priest in 1612, and a river god, then Plato (in an engraving after Rubens) in about 1615. Design for a Sword Hilt.

Design for a Sword Hilt. Culture: German, probably Nuremberg. Dimensions: 8 1/2 x 11 3/8 in. (21.5 x 28.8 cm). Date: ca.1550.Original designs for Renaissance swords are exceptionally rare, although notable examples by such reknowned artists as Hans Holbein the Younger and Giulio Romano are preserved. Previously unrecorded, the present drawing is a significant addition to this small corpus and is a work of art in its own right. The style and iconography point to Nuremberg and possibly to Peter Flötner (ca. 1486-1546), one of that city‘s most versatile artists. Of robust proportions, the hilt was presumably intended as a side arm to be executed in chased silver or gold. The pommel is conceived in the round with four female heads beneath an imperial crown, while the grip is embellished with a double-headed imperial eagle incorporated into a classical trophy of arms. A City on a Rock.

A City on a Rock. Artist: Style of Goya (Spanish, 19th century). Dimensions: 33 x 41 in. (83.8 x 104.1 cm). When A City on a Rock was purchased in Spain in the mid-1880s by an American collector, it was attributed to Francisco de Goya (1746-1828). The painting is now thought to be by one of Goya‘s followers and may have been painted as late as 1850-75. The artist has studied Goya‘s technique, and has produced a painting sufficiently close to his style that it was accepted by most authorities until about 1970. The picture appears to be a pastiche, as many compositional elements derive from autograph works by Goya.
