Gongsaengwon, which means Symbiosis Park, was launched in 1928 as an orphanage by Yoon Chi-ho, a Christian evangelist, and run by his Japanese wife, Yoon Hak-ja, who had the Japanese name Chizuko Tauchi and hailed from Kochi Prefecture. Touted as the Japanese mother of Korean orphans, she raised many Korean orphans at the orphanage after her Korean husband went missing during the 1950-53 Korean War.
