Wild Animals: Florida Life and Economy

June 6, 2021, SARASOTA, FLORIDA, USA: In 2011, while on the Island of Curacao, Allie El Hage set out to design a containment device for containing speared lionfish. The primary focus and design criteria was diver safety. This device would be used by scuba divers that remove the invasive lionfish off the coral reefs. Due to the venomous spines of the lionfish, a diver must be able to contain the lionfish so that minimal harm came to the diver. After various designs being tested, the Lionfish Containment Unit was finalized. The LCU proved to be successful in allowing scuba divers to safely remove large quantities of lionfish. Its simple design and ease of use allowed divers to be more efficient in removing large quantities of lionfish, giving our marine eco-system breathing room from these invasive species. In 2012, ZooKeeper was moved to Sarasota, Florida. (Credit Image: © John Marshall Mantel/ZUMA Wire)、クレジット:©John Marshall Mantel/ZUMA Wire/共同通信イメージズ

Fishermen Struggle Amid Crumbling Economy and Fuel Shortages

June 26, 2021, Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon: Fisherman Nasser Mshek holds a spearfished lion fish, an invasive species in the Mediterranean Sea, near the Rock of RaouchŽ, Beirut, Lebanon on June 26, 2021. Fishermen use to get paid LL10,000 for each kilogram (2.2 pounds) of fish when the Lebanese Lira traded at LL1,500 per $1. Today, the LiraÃs value hit a record low, trading at least at LL18,000, yet the fishermen get paid LL25,000 per kilogram of fish. Their diminished wages make boat upkeep difficult so some fishers, unable to pay for repairs, send their boats to the junkyard. The fishermen also struggle to get gasoline during the countryÃs fuel shortage, with gas station attendants telling the fishermen that fuel for a boat is a luxury, so they often refuse to sell gasoline to them. Fenjiezhou Island, located in the Lingshui Li Autonomous County, boasts coral reef ecosystem. Before proper development and management, the coral reefs, as well as seabed ecology, have been severely damaged due to illegal exploitation. To restore the local underwater ecology, Fenjiezhou scenic area authorities, together with oceanic and fishery researchers, have been growing and transplanting corals since 2004. Meanwhile, fishermen have been offered jobs in the scenic area. After over ten years of protection and restoration, the coral coverage rate of Fenjiezhou Island waters has reached 34 percent, with some area reaching 40 percent to 50 percent.
