Wrought iron tubular trussed bridge over the river Wye at Chepstow

Wrought iron tubular trussed bridge over the river Wye at Chepstow, c1885. This bridge, constructed 1849-1852, was an innovative design by Sambaed Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) and the use of wrought iron tubular girders is considered to be a dummy run for his last great masterpiece, the Royal Albert bridge over the Tamar at Saltash. The Chepstow bridge carried the South Wales Railway over the Wye. Brunel was engineer to the railway. From ‘The Popular Educator‘. (London, c1885). 、クレジット:World History Archive/ニューズコム/共同通信イメージズ

The Royal Albert Bridge (Viaduct) at Saltash.

The Royal Albert Bridge (Viaduct) at Saltash. The Bridge carrying the railway over the estuary of the Tamar at Saltash and linking Devon and Cornwall, England. Inaugurated by Prince Albert in May 1859, this was Isambard Kingdom Brunel‘s last masterpiece. His use of prefabricated wrought iron tubes in this bow-string girder bridge was on a much larger scale than his innovative bridge at Chepstow.
