    Detonation of first atomic bomb

Sequence of 6 images recording detonation of World‘s first atomic bomb, at 5:30 a.m., July 16, 1945, in desert near Alamogordo Air Base, New Mexico. Codenamed \Trinity\“, the explosion illuminated the night sky \“with an intensity many times that of the midday sun\“, shattered windows 125 miles away and produced a mushroom cloud between 50,000 and 70,000 feet in height. \“Trinity\“ was the result of over 2 years‘ work by a group of engineers and scientists based at Los Alamos, New Mexico, led by J. Robert Oppenheimer. Three weeks after the \“Trinity\“ explosion, a second atomic bomb was detonated over Hiroshima, Japan. Photographed by U.S. Army motion picture camera at distance of 8 miles from blast. National Archives“、クレジット:SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/共同通信イメージズ

    J. Robert Oppenheimer

    J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967), the American theoretical physicist. From 1943-45 he was in charge of the secret Los Alamos Laboratory, New Mexico, where the first atomic bomb was designed & built. Later he fought for international control of the bomb and he was a high-profile opponent to the development of the more potent hydrogen bomb. In 1947-53 he was chairman of the general advisory committee to the Atomic Energy Commission (the AEC, from whom he also received the Fermi award in 1963). In 1954 however the AEC removed his security clearance, mainly due to the testimony of Edward Teller.、クレジット:SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/共同通信イメージズ

    Robert Oppenheimer and Norris Bradbury

Norris Bradbury, left, and Robert J. Oppenheimer (1904-1967) at Los Alamos, New Mexico, in May 1964. The Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory was set up under Oppenheimer in 1943 to develop the atomic bomb. After the Second World War there were many who felt that the laboratory should push onward with research into the hydrogen bomb, to consolidate the lead held by the U.S. in terms of nuclear weaponry, a task which Oppenheimer felt distinctly uneasy about. Bradbury had no such qualms however and hence succeeded to the directorship of the laboratory, a role he played until 1970.、クレジット:SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/共同通信イメージズ
