Mountaineer Piyali Basak, a primary school educator from Chandernagore, nearly ascended Mount Everest without additional oxygen. After reaching a height of 8,450 meters, the climber was assisted with external oxygen support. She fulfilled her goal after hundreds of Bengalis collaborated for over a month to generate funds for her summit through crowdsourcing. Multiple summit reports from Mount Everest indicate that over 4,000 people have ascended the highest mountain to date, but only 200 of them did so without supplemental oxygen. Piyali will be the first Indian woman on the list if she finally receives the certificate of summiting the mountain without supplemental oxygen.
