Roads have been carved into the landscape and buildings erected near Balikpapan Bay in Eastern Kalimantan, as Indonesia builds a new capital city, home to 30 million people. Frequent flooding, heavy traffic, hazardous air pollution, and drinking water shortages are common occurrences. Jakarta is also quickly sinking. The macapat school, which was founded in the 1960s and is free for the people, is a real form of preserving the cultural heritage of traditional Javanese poetry. Macapat is a traditional Javanese song or poem in which each stanza has a sentence line called gatra, has certain syllables (guru wilangan), and ends at the sound of the final rhyme called ‘‘guru lagu‘‘.
