The Treaty of Amiens temporarily ended hostilities between the French Republic and the United Kingdom during the French Revolutionary Wars. It was signed in the city of Amiens on 25 March 1802 (Germinal 4, year X in the French Revolutionary Calendar), by Joseph Bonaparte and the Marquess Cornwallis as a ‘Definitive Treaty of Peace‘. The consequent Peace of Amiens lasted only one year (18 May 1803) and was the only period of peace during the so-called ‘Great French War‘ between 1793 and 1815、クレジット:World History Archive/ニューズコム/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用に関してはお問合せください。

Study Sheet with Three Women and a Boy.

Study Sheet with Three Women and a Boy. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: sheet: 8 11/16 x 6 7/16 in. (22 x 16.4 cm). Date: ca. 1638-39.Rembrandt often picked up pen and paper to capture a briefly glimpsed pose or a fascinating character he observed on the street, and he also made sketches to work out the expression or stance of figures destined for prints or paintings. He may have drawn the figures on this sheet from life, but the costume of the old woman viewed from several angles as well as her pose and the pose of the young man in the center suggest that they were ultimately intended as studies for biblical characters. クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Virgin and Child. Artist: Bartolomé Estebán Murillo (Spanish, Seville 1617-1682 Seville). Dimensions: 65 1/4 x 43 in. (165.7 x 109.2 cm). Date: ca. 1670-72.Like Zurbarán and Velázquez, Murillo was trained in Seville, where he spent his whole career. This painting of the Madonna and Child formed part of the collection of the Marqués de Santiago, who owned a number of outstanding works by the artist. The popularity of Murillo‘s paintings of the Madonna and Child derives from his ability to endow a timeworn theme with a quality of intimacy and sweetness. The infant‘s attention has, in this picture, been momentarily diverted from nursing by the presence of the viewer. Viewing the Sunset over Ryōgoku Bridge from the Onmaya Embankment (Onmayagashi yori Ryōgokubashi sekiyō o miru), from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei), 冨嶽三十六景 御厩川岸より両国橋夕陽見, Edo period (1615–1868), ca. 1830–32, Japan, Polychrome woodblock print; ink and color on paper, 9 15/16 x 14 11/16 in. (25.2 x 37.3 cm), Prints, Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, Tokyo (Edo) 1760–1849 Tokyo (Edo)), The contemplative attitude of the oarsman who has momentarily stopped to admire the view mirrors the spectator‘s own thoughtful act of looking. • Paul Cézanne: The Large Bathers (Les Grandes baigneuses)

Paul Cézanne: The Large Bathers (Les Grandes baigneuses)

Paul Cézanne: The Large Bathers (Les Grandes baigneuses), Paul Cézanne, 1895–1906, Oil on canvas, Note: This work has been temporarily removed from display for technical study and conservation treatment. Funding for its conservation was generously provided through a grant from the Bank of America Art Conservation Project. This is one of three monumental bathing scenes that Cézanne produced at the very end of his career. Thick with paint, the canvas seems to have occupied him, on and off, for about ten years, between 1895 and 1906. The theme of bathers in a landscape originated in the Renaissance and traditionally showed idealized female bodies in total harmony with nature. Here, Cézanne disturbs this easy relationship. Space is hard to read, and the landscape—note the dead tree branches and ominous clouds—seems harsh and threatening.、クレジット:Universal Images Group/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用に関してはお問合せください。

    1973年07月02日
Air traffic controller strike of 1973

An oasis of calm on 02.07.1973 is similar to the apron of the airport Hannover-Langenhagen. The airport was temporarily closed by the Federal Minister of Transport because of the slow-moving strike of the air traffic controllers. The German air traffic controllers put from 31.05. until 23/11/1973 with its “service after rule“ designated Ausstand for nearly six months the air traffic in the Federal Republic lame. Tens of thousands of flights had to be canceled, several million passengers were forced to change their travel plans or to accept delays. The airlines suffered a loss of an estimated 500 million marks (255.65 million euros). The strike is considered one of the most costly labor struggles in the history of the Federal Republic. The air traffic controllers demanded from the Federal Government, inter alia, higher salaries, hardship allowances, as well as a reduction of the retirement age from 65 to 52 years.
