    Travel News - April 25, 2020

April 25, 2020, Alberta, Canada: Messier 81 (the spiral galaxy below) and M82 (the irregular galaxy on top) in Ursa Major. M81 is Bode’s Galaxy, while M82 is the Cigar Galaxy. The galaxy at bottom left is NGC 3077 This is a stack of 10 x 10-minute exposures with the Canon EOS Ra camera at ISO 800 through the Astro-Physics 130mm apo refractor at f/6 with the 6x7 field flattener lens. Taken April 24/25, 2020. North is up in this view. (Credit Image: © Alan Dyer/VW Pics via ZUMA Wire)、クレジット:©Alan Dyer/VW Pics via ZUMA Wire/共同通信イメージズ

    NASA‘s James Webb Space Telescope

July 31, 2023 - Space - The irregular galaxy NGC 6822, which was observed by the Near-InfraRed Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) mounted on the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope. As their names suggest, NIRCam and MIRI probe different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. This allows the instruments to observe different components of the same galaxy, with MIRI especially sensitive to its gas-rich regions (the yellow swirls in this image) and NIRCam suitable for observing its densely packed field of stars. NGC 6822 lies about 1.5 million light-years away, and is the Milky Way nearest galactic neighbour that is not one of its satellites. It has a very low metallicity, meaning that it contains very low proportions of elements that are not hydrogen and helium. In fact, its metallicity is only about 6% of that of the Sun...、クレジット:©ESA/NASA/ZUMA Press Wire/共同通信イメージズ

Stunning First Full-Colour Images From Euclid Telescope

HANDOUT - Irregular galaxy NGC 6822. The European Space Agency‘s (ESA) Euclid space mission unveiled its first five full-colour images of the cosmos on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Launched in July, Euclid is a cutting-edge telescope tasked with mapping a third of the extragalactic sky, shedding light on how dark matter and dark energy shape our universe. This ambitious mission is unique in its ability to capture razor-sharp astronomical images across a vast expanse of the sky, offering unprecedented insights into the far reaches of the universe. The initial set of images serves as a testament to Euclid‘s unparalleled capability to construct the most extensive 3D map of the universe to date. Among the images, the most captivating is a panoramic view of the Horsehead Nebula, also known as Barnard 33, situated in the Orion constellation approximately 1,375 light-years away. The nebula, with its striking equine shape, stands as the nearest giant star-forming region to Earth...、クレジット:ABACA/共同通信イメージズ

    Dwarf Irregular Galaxy UGC 8091

December 20, 2023 - Space - The billion stars in galaxy UGC 8091 resemble a sparkling snow globe in this festive Hubble Space Telescope image from NASA and ESA (European Space Agency). The dwarf galaxy is approximately 7 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo. It is considered an “irregular galaxy“ because it does not have an orderly spiral or elliptical appearance. Instead, the stars that make up this celestial gathering look more like a brightly shining tangle of string lights than a galaxy.
