NASA ‘DART‘ Mission To Defend Earth From Asteroids

August 30, 2021 - Laurel, Maryland, USA - Dangling from a crane inside one of the high bays at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, the Light Italian CubeSat for Imaging Asteroids, or LICIACube, was ready for installation on NASA‘s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft. Ever so carefully, a team of American and Italian engineers maneuvered the 6U CubeSat, weighing 31 pounds (14 kilograms) and measuring roughly the length of an adult‘s hand and forearm, into place. September 25, 2022; Vandenberg, USA: FILE: Technicians prepare to move NASA‘s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft onto a work stand inside the Astrotech Space Operations Facility at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California following its arrival at the facility on Oct. 4, 2021. Once secured on its stand, the spacecraft will undergo a series of tests and checkouts to confirm it is ready for launch. DART is the first mission to test technologies for preventing an impact of Earth by a hazardous asteroid. The mission is targeted to launched on Nov. 23, 2021, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg. Handout photo - The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), which will help determine if intentionally crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid is an effective way to change its course, is scheduled to launch no earlier than 1:21 a.m. EST Wednesday, November 24 (10:21 p.m. PST Tuesday, November 23) on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. This illustration is of the DART spacecraft and the Italian Space Agencys (ASI) LICIACube prior to impact at the Didymos binary system.DART is the agencys first planetary defense test mission and the target asteroid is not a threat to Earth. NASA ‘DART‘ Mission To Defend Earth From Asteroids

September 28, 2022 - Space - For the first time, NASA‘s James Webb Space Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope have taken simultaneous observations of the same target. These images, Hubble (blue) and Webb (red), show observations of Dimorphos several hours after NASA‘s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) intentionally impacted the moonlet asteroid. It was the world‘s first test of the kinetic impact technique using a spacecraft to deflect an asteroid by modifying its orbit. Both Webb and Hubble observed the asteroid before and after the collision took place.
