    Confederate Memorial Day survives in Georgia

    April 13, 2021, Marietta, GA, USA: Civil War re-enactors wait to fire their muskets concluding services at Marietta Confederate Cemetery April 11, observing Confederate Memorial Day. The observance originated in 1866 in Columbus, Georgia to honor approximately 258,000 Confederate soldiers who died in the war, and is known as Heroes Day in Texas and Florida, and Confederate Decoration Day in Tennessee. The cultural holiday is observed in several Southern U.S. states on various dates since the end of the Civil War. It is an official state holiday in South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee. .Georgia now recognizes the day only as a Ãstate holiday.Ã State employees still have the day off off, but the the state no longer memorializes the South‘s casualties after then-Governor Nathan Deal in 2015 struck Confederate Memorial Day and Robert E.
