    The Nereid Monument, Lycia, Anatolia, Turkey. Classical Greek. c.400BC The Nereid‘s form part of the decoration of a monumental temple-like tomb (The Nereid Monument). The Nereids, numbering between 50 and 100, were daughters of the sea-deities Nereus and Doris. They were popular figures in Greek literature, believed to be personifications of the waves of the ocean, and benign toward humanity.
