  • DAVID AND GOLIATH.

    DAVID AND GOLIATH.

David and Goliath. Artist: After Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio or Santi) (Italian, Urbino 1483-1520 Rome); Ugo da Carpi (Italian, Carpi ca. 1480-1532 Bologna). Dimensions: Sheet: 10 3/8 × 15 3/8 in. (26.3 × 39 cm). Date: 1510-30.Early chiaroscuro woodcuts involved printing with two or more woodblocks, each in a different hue, to attain light and dark tonal values similar to those achieved in wash drawings. Ugo da Carpi was the first Italian artist to use this technique. He claimed to have invented a new way to print in “light and dark“ (chiaro et scuro), though German artists had started experimenting with similar woodcuts several years prior. To protect his “invention,“ the Venetian Senate granted Ugo an exclusive privilege in 1516, and he also received a papal privilege in 1518. クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Youth Kneeling before a Prelate (recto); Another Study of a Youth Kneeling before a Prelate (verso). Artist: Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri) (Italian, Cento 1591-1666 Bologna). Dimensions: sheet: 9 3/8 x 7 9/16 in. (23.8 x 19.2 cm). Date: ca. 1620.This double-sided sheet features two closely similar sketches for the principal figures in Guercino‘s altarpiece representing Saint William, Duke of Aquitaine, receiving the monastic habit, painted in 1620 for the Church of San Gregorio in Bologna (now Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna). Both studies show one composition but reversed in design orientation with respect to the final altarpiece. Guercino‘s preparation for this celebrated early work is recorded in a number of composition sketches. In the painting, Saint William, kneeling before Saint Benedict of Ariane who is seated at the left, pulls a monastic cowl over his head、クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Madame Jacques-Louis Leblanc (Françoise Poncelle, 1788-1839).

Madame Jacques-Louis Leblanc (Françoise Poncelle, 1788-1839). Artist: Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (French, Montauban 1780-1867 Paris). Dimensions: 47 x 36 1/2 in. (119.4 x 92.7 cm). Date: 1823.For this portrait there are more than two dozen drawings investigating a variety of poses (Musée Ingres, Montauban). Similar studies do not exist for the likeness of Madame Leblanc‘s husband (19.77.1). The two paintings--the only pair of portraits Ingres produced--were probably intended to hang facing one another, since the light falls differently in each, but they are unified by the visual harmony of hands, gold chains, and rich textiles that enhance the couple‘s black clothing. This work, however, was exhibited without its pendant at the Salon of 1834. The Rehearsal of the Ballet Onstage.

The Rehearsal of the Ballet Onstage. Artist: Edgar Degas (French, Paris 1834-1917 Paris). Dimensions: 21 3/8 x 28 3/4 in. (54.3 x 73 cm). Date: ca. 1874.There are three similar versions of this scene, and their precise relationship has bedeviled scholars for decades. The largest, painted in grisaille (Musée d‘Orsay, Paris), appeared in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. The two others, tentatively dated the same year, are in the Metropolitan‘s collection. This painting probably preceded the version in pastel (29.100.39), which is more freely handled. The importance that Degas attached to the composition is evident in the preparatory drawings that he made for almost every figure, from the dancer scratching her back in the foreground to the woman yawning next to the stage flat. Man with a Beard, Oil on canvas, 28 7/8 x 25 1/4 in. (73.3 x 64.1 cm), Paintings, Style of Rembrandt (17th century or later), Though generally accepted by Rembrandt scholars until about 1940, this canvas was considered an eighteenth-century imitation by F. Schmidt-Degener in 1935. Supporting this view is the sketchy execution, which is superficially similar to that found in Rembrandt‘s ‘study heads‘ painted on a much smaller scale; the light chalk ground and the man‘s collar appears fancifully to adopt an older Dutch form.、クレジット:Sepia Times/Universal Images Group/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用に関してはお問合せください。
