    A Letter to Eugène Maus, Decorated with Two Plums. Artist: Édouard Manet (French, Paris 1832-1883 Paris). Dedicatee: Written to Eugène Henri Maus (Belgian, 1847-1881). Dimensions: sheet: 7 15/16 x 9 3/4 in. (20.1 x 24.8 cm); folded once to form four pages. Date: August 2, 1880.The letters Manet embellished with watercolors of flowers and fruit from his garden at Bellevue and sent to his friends are among the most prized of his works because of their enchanting informality. Our letter is a little-known example, fresh in color and featuring one of his favorite subjects, the yellow-green plums called mirabelles.The Manets lodged in Bellevue in a small house at 41 route des Gardes. At least forty letters can be dated with some certainty to Manet‘s 1880 summer stay in Bellevue. This is the first of two Addressed to Eugène Maus. Taken on a slightly hazy night on March 25, 2019, thus the natural star glows – the cluster is not surrounded by nebulosity! ..However, the sky is clear enough that some of the very faint IC, UGC, and PGC galaxies in the field show up. Most are 15th to 17th magnitude. ..I’ve punched up the star colours with a star mask. Stars tightened with StarShrink filter. Diffraction spikes added in post with Astronomy Tools actions.     NTTのレーザービーム成形装置

    NTTは、回折光学素子(DOE)を用いた板状の装置で形状を整えたレーザービームを照射し、狭い場所や凹凸面のサビを簡単に除去する技術を開発した。従来品は高出力のレーザービームを左右に振って照射するため装置が大型だったが、同装置の活用により小型・軽量化できる。鉄塔やマンホール内部の通信設備など大型装置の搬入が困難だった場所での活用を目指す。DOEは、シリコンウエハー基板などの表面に微細な凹凸パターンを形成したもので、回折現象を利用することで光を分岐、整形できる。このDOEを用いた板状の装置にレーザービームを当てる。これによりドット(点)状だったビームの形状を線状へ変化させ、サビを均一に落とす。1回の照射で金属光沢を出せる。砂などの研磨剤を吹き付けてサビを取るサンドブラストでは作業技術が必要で作業員に応じて作業結果がまちまちになる。新技術を用いれば小型で軽量化された機器による簡単な操作でサビが落とせるようになり、新入社員や女性でも均質な仕上がりが可能。レーザーの出力を過剰に上げる必要もなくなり、より安全に作業できる。光通信用の部品開発技術を凹凸や狭い場所が多い通信装置の保守に応用しようと研究を続けてきた。通信設備のサビを除去し、鋼面を露出させるケレン加工での採用を見込む。レーザー照射した表面を分析し、塗装との相性の良い照射法も開発する。=2019(令和元)年11月11日、撮影場所不明、クレジット:日刊工業新聞/共同通信イメージズ

    ★This astronomical portrait from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope showcases an edge-on view of the majestic spiral galaxy UGC 11537. Hubbleâs Wide Field Camera 3 has captured the tightly wound spiral arms swirling around the heart of UGC 11537 at infrared and visible wavelengths, showing both the bright bands of stars and the dark clouds of dust threading throughout the galaxy.  UGC 11537 is 230 million light-years away in the constellation Aquila, and lies close to the plane of the Milky Way. Being so close to the starry band of the Milky Way means that foreground stars from our own galaxy have crept into the image â the two prominent stars in front of UGC 11537 are interlopers from within the Milky Way.
