Hasankeyfs Fall - The Flooding of an Ancient City

09 September 2019, Turkey, Hasankeyf: Construction work below the ancient castle of Hasankeyf on the Tigris River in south-east Turkey. A massive rampart is created to protect the soft cliff rock against flooding. They want to stop the castle from slipping into the lake. By the end of the year at the latest, Hasankeyf, which is said to have been inhabited for around 12,000 years, will be under water. About 70 kilometres further downstream, the new Ilisu Megadam has started work and has been damming water for several weeks. According to local authorities, the heart of the small city centre is to be evacuated and partly demolished by 8 October. The people have to move to a new town, which they had largely boycotted for a long time.
