Cleaning of queen of the water lilies

24 August 2018, Germany, Halle/Saale: In the Victoriahaus of the Botanical Garden of the Martin-Luther-University Halle/Wittemberg, district gardener Matthias Pabst stands in the water basin to clean up the up to 1.50 meter large withered leaves of the giant water lily “Victoria“. Once a week during the summer months, the yellowed leaves, whose underside consists of a finger-thick network filled with small air cushions, are divided into four “pieces of cake“ because of their weight and brought to compost. The white flowers of the “Queen of the Water Lilies“, named after Queen Victoria (1819-1901) of England, only open in the evening and at night.

Idyll in the plot in demand - great demand for allotment gardens

30 June 2020, Saxony, Leipzig: In the allotment gardeners‘ association “Dr. Schreber“ in Leipzig, the oldest in the world, there are watering cans in front of a composting place in the garden of 88-year-old Helga Honer. Although her 160 square metre plot has been taken over by her children, the sprightly senior citizen does not allow herself to be deprived of light maintenance work in her green oasis. In the idyllically situated listed building in the centre of Leipzig, where the first Schreberverein was founded in 1864, tenants have to wait three years for a plot.
